March 2008

First | Previous | Next | Current

Monday, March 31, 2008--After work today, I went to the gym and benchpressed 190 lbs. I'm getting stronger every day!
Sunday, March 30, 2008--For some odd reason, I decided to go and play Soul Calibur 3. I dunno why. It may or may not be in anticipation of Soul Calibur 4.

On this day:
In 2004: Physics 7C - 137!!!

Saturday, March 29, 2008--WTF snowstorm.

On this day:
In 2003: Franklin Faceless Butchers my Sliver Queen. Bernard and Franklin bring me down to 1 Life. Bernard kills Franklin. I get my Sliver Queen back. Bernard forfeits.

Thursday, March 27, 2008--Today, I decided to walk to work because, while it was going to be cold, it was also dry and sunny, so it was a good day to walk to work.

On this day:
In 2003: I get accepted into Berkeley EECS.

Wednesday, March 26, 2008--Normally, I go to the gym on Thursdays, but MichCh wanted to go to the gym on Wednesday this week because he "planned to eat dinner on Thursday".
Monday, March 24, 2008--After work today, I went to the gym and benchpressed 180 lbs. I'm getting stronger every day!
Saturday, March 22, 2008--Today, Meher and MichCh and I went to Pho Hoa for lunch. ("Hey Dwayne, this is Michael. We're right outside your apartment, but there's no rush. Take your time in getting ready.") Then went to I have no idea where and got some ice cream at Ben & Jerry's.

me: We should get a Vermonster.
me: Actually, no, we most definitely should not get a Vermonster.

Later tonight, it was Jon's St. Patrick's Day themed party, so I went there. We also watched Hard Candy. I wholeheartedly recommend against seeing this movie, especially if you're a guy.
Friday, March 21, 2008--After work today, I went to Uncle's Games at Crossroads Mall to play a booster draft with the peeps. Unfortunately, we were all out of Lorwyn packs and Time Spiral packs, so we ended up doing an unusual draft (well, okay, not that unusual): triple Morningtide!

So at the start, I opened a Murmuring Bosk (the Treefolk tri-land), so I decided to go green, mainly for trees. In the second pack, I got passed a pair of Thornbite Staves (the Shaman stick), so I figure, what the hell, there are plenty of Treefolk Shamans. It shouldn't be too hard to switch from Treefolk to Shamans. Then, somewhere along the way, I picked up black as my secondary color (mainly for kill cards), and I decided to pick up some elves so I could have some creatures lower on the curve to allow me to survive better in the early game. Here is what my deck ended up looking like:
9xForest
7xSwamp
Murmuring Bosk
Bosk Banneret
3xElvish Warrior
2xLys Alana Bowmaster
Chameleon Colossus
2xEverbark Shaman
2xOrchard Warden
Blightsoil Druid
Warren Weirding
2xPack's Disdain
4xSqueaking Pie Grubfellows
Violet Pall
Cloak and Dagger
2xThornbite Staff

In my first round, I played against a dood named Pierson, who is apparently on GamrChat and hasn't played since 4th Edition. So naturally, he's a little rusty. (Not to mention the rules changed in 6th Edition, so...) Needless to say, I defeated him. Record: 1-0

In my second round, I played against Ian. At first, he was doing well against me. Then, I got out my big beaters and smashed him down. Interestingly in game 3, I had an Elvish Warrior (a 2/3) and he had a Mosquito Guard with a +1/+1 counter on it (which makes it a 2/2 first strike). So earlier in the game, he had used Release the Ants and clashed it back to his hand. I unfortunately forgot about that card, so when he attacked with his Mosquito Guard, I blocked. And between the Mosquito Guard's first strike damage and the Release the Ants (which fortunately this time did not get clashed back), my Elvish Warrior was quite dead. Later, Ian replied to my play mistake with one of his own. I had a Chameleon Colossus equipped with a Cloak and Dagger, and Ian had a pair of 4/4 critters. So I attacked with my Colossus (currently a 6/4 with the cloak), and Ian (making a math mistake) double blocks with his 4/4s. Unfortunately, the Colossus's ability is based on its power, so when I activated it, it became a 12/10, which killed the 4/4s quite dead while still surviving. A few turns later, and Ian was smashed by the ginormous Colossus. Record: 2-0

So as it turns out, there was another dood named Dwayne at the booster draft. (Yeah, I know. It was really really weird.) In any case, by the end of round 2, me and the other Dwayne both had 2-0 records, so there was a chance of a Dwayne vs Dwayne match. Unfortunately, as it turns out, we started the draft with 9 players, so there were three 2-0s. (And two players dropped, leaving 7 players left, so we were playing 3 rounds.) So I ended up paired against Jon.

And the thing about Jon is, he is a much better player than I am. He apparently drafted a lightning-quick rogue deck. I don't remember much, but I remember getting trounced. I also remember in game 3, a Moonglove Changeling equipped with a Diviner's Wand, so it was flying. He also had a pair of Stinkdrinker Bandits (and that Changeling counts as a rogue, too), so he was hitting hard. I died pretty fast. Record: 2-1.

I ended up with a final record of 3rd place with 2 boosters as my prize.
Wednesday, March 19, 2008--Happy Birthday, Fred!

After work, in attempts to celebrate Fred's bday (and since he's French), I and Fred and Jon went to Campagne and had delicious French food. They were part of the whole 30 for $30 thing, so we got a three course meal for $30. I had the soup du jour, the truites aux amandes and the gateau de chocolat. No, I don't know how to pronounce any of those.
Tuesday, March 18, 2008--After work today, I went to the Cafe 16/17 to play a Magic the Gathering draft. I ended up drafting blue-white again. My deck was pretty bad. I'm not gonna bother listing it here.
Monday, March 17, 2008--Happy St. Patty's Day! (except apparently, it got moved)

Viltris: rumor is, St. Patrick's Day got moved this year
Chris: officially it was saturday
Chris: in the catholic church, this is holy week, and that supercedes any saint's feast day, so they had to move it
Viltris: I see
Viltris: well, I'm not Catholic, so may I observe St. Patrick's Day today?
Viltris: I already wore green today
Chris: yeah, u're good
Viltris: and the waitress at the restaurant I went to told people happy St. Patty's Day today
Chris: the irish were drunk both today and saturday
Chris: so either one works

On this day:
In 2004:
  • The Sarah dream... how depressing...
  • Sarah: Are you high?

Also, I went to the gym and benchpressed 170 lbs. I'm getting stronger every day!
Sunday, March 16, 2008--You know what's a good way to break my addiction to The Sims? Loaning it to someone.

On this day:
In 2007: I meet Chao's friend Feng's friend Bonnie, who looks just like Cindy. D'oh!
In 2006: I break a personal record and stay in lab past midnight (and promptly leave once I realize it's past midnight). Fortunately, I spent that time making my robot EE192 car frickin' awesome.

Saturday, March 15, 2008--Today, I went to Fred's dinner party. He had one of those dinner murder mystery games. I was the only person to solve the mystery, but then again, it was because I was in the best position to solve the mystery. That and, my character was the "obvious" suspect, so instead of accusing myself of murder, I accused someone else.

On this day:
In 2004: (In the 7th floor lounge)
Me: Tiffany! What are you doing here?
Tiffany: Dwayne! What are you doing here?
Me: ...okay, fair enough.
In 2003: "You wanna supersize that for 35 cents?" "What happens if someone uses that line in the prostitution industry?"

Friday, March 14, 2008--Happy Pi Day!
Thursday, March 13, 2008--After coming home from the gym after going to the gym after work, I picked up my mother from the airport, because she was coming to visit.
Wednesday, March 12, 2008--I dunno why, but I'm addicted to Desktop Tower Defense (also called DTD for short, not to be confused with these DTDs) again. I still can't beat hard mode, though. I'm not sure why.

But yeah. While winding down from work, I needed to babysit a build until the build was ready to proceed fully automatically. While I was waiting, I decided to play DTD, and it was so addictive, I ended up sticking around until 10pm playing DTD. Whoops!

On this day:
In 2004: I meet Karen Y for the first time. (She was wearing what I called a "Ninja weapon" in her hair.)

Tuesday, March 11, 2008--After work today, I decided to hang out with the Tuesday Night Dinner and Games folks for once (mainly because I had nothing else to eat for dinner). So we went to Malay Satay hut and had some Malay Satay.

I then got caught in a game of Illuminati (which we decided to quit after a few rounds because the newbs were being n00bish), then played some Apples to Apples (which is always good for random hilarity), then played some Pandemic (which is apparently a PvE game about doctors trying to cure diseases or something; we lost miserably).

There may have been panda bears involved.

On this day:
In 2006: I encounter Little Vivian on MapleStory.
In 2004:
  • Kim: This table is unbalanced... *shouts across the table to me* Hello, down there!
  • Prof Pearson: So was it worth it for us to have spent the last two or three hours on an episode that lasted only a few years? Personally, I think no.
  • Prof Pearson: This isn't summer camp for building self-esteem. If you wanted that, you should have gone to Palo Alto.

Monday, March 10, 2008--After work today, I went to the gym and benchpressed 160 lbs. I'm getting stronger every day!

On this day:
In 2004:
Me: Hey, you know the movie "The Passion of Christ"?
Christine: Yea.
Me: Well, how about
Me: "The Passion of Christine"?
Christine: Hahaha!
Christine: It'd be a movie about eating.

Saturday, March 8, 2008--Heh, so apparently, tomorrow is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. It's funny. Daylight Saving Time is now the majority of the year. Ferdinand commented that Winter should just be called "Daylight Wasting Time" instead.

You know, apparently, studies have shown that apparently Daylight Saving Time doesn't really help much in terms of saving electricity. But that doesn't mean it's totally useless. Humans (especially me) tend to wake up long after the sunrise and go to sleep long after the sunset. Which means there's a few hours of sunlight before we wake up that we aren't even using. Daylight Saving Time shifts time forward so now suddenly, there's less sunlight in the morning and more sunlight in the evening, which is good.

Me? I support Daylight Saving Time. It allows me to have 10pm sunsets up here in Washington on the Summer Solstices.

On this day:
In 2007: Apparently, Beth is short for Elisabeth.
In 2005: I learn the importance of design (in CS150).
In 2004: Sliver Week on MTG.com

Why is The Sims so addictive?
Friday, March 7, 2008--After work, Meher, me, MichCh, Troy, and some other doods went to go see 10000bc. Apparently, this movie has been getting bad reviews and people have been saying that it sucked. But you know, I've seen plenty of movies that were a lot worse. (And also, whether a movie is good or bad depends on context. For example, I absolutely hated the second and third X-Men movies, but a lot of people (who either did not know about or ignored the context) liked them.)

Although it should be said that for me, a good movie is one that entertains me, and a bad movie is one that doesn't entertain me. Oddly enough, I also tend rate things very very harshly (numerically speaking).
Thursday, March 6, 2008--I go to the gym Mondays and Thursdays. Lately, for some reason, on Mondays, I've been doing benchpresses on the benchpress machine, and on Thursdays, I've been doing pullups on the Gravitron. (The Gravitron is a machine that uses air pressure to reduce the amount of weight you lift when you do pullups, so people of different strengths can do pullups and still get the maximal workout. Unfortunately, air pressure isn't the easiest thing to calibrate.)

Also, I try to do a shorter workout on Thursdays so I can go home and watch Lost. And since Little Vivian watches Lost, it's even more awesomer because I can then go discuss it with her.

On this day:
In 2006: Little Vivian joins my forums.
In 2004:
Me: Do I wear my sleeve on my heart?
Tiffany Saya: Umm... isn't it the other way around?
In 2003:
  • Andrew Matsuoka, Unicycle Rider
  • "At one point, I asked Christine, the TA, if she would like to be on our stock group. It was funny. She just stood there and was like, 'Umm... No, I don't think so.'"

Wednesday, March 5, 2008--Wednesdays are usually a long day for me. Mainly because I don't have any activities to do after work, so I stick around for a while to get work done.

On this day:
In 2005: My first 3D program.

Monday, March 3, 2008--After work today, I went to the gym and benchpressed 150 lbs. I'm getting stronger every day!

I, uh... I say that every week, don't I? Except the number keeps going up.

On this day:
In 2007: I beat La Pucelle.

Sunday, March 2, 2008--Today isn't very interesting. In fact, this entry exists solely for
On this day:
In 2003:
  • Justin parts the Track Runners.
  • I buy the Sliver pre-constructed deck.

Saturday, March 1, 2008--Today, Meher, Michael, and me had lunch at Pike Place market at a Bolivian restaurant (now I can claim that I know how to spell paella, and I have eaten paella), and then went to the Seattle Museum. There was a special Roman exhibit on loan from the Louvre, apparently. While I found it somewhat interesting, I discovered that one begins to really appreciate color after looking at marble statues and sculptures for an hour and a half.

Afterwards, Meher was "saturated with information" and I was tired of seeing marble, so we went to go look at more traditional art: That is, European paintings. (The other suggestion was modern art. I like modern art. Sure, some of it's really weird, but that's the appeal to it. You look at it and go, oh, that's interesting, or oh, that's odd, or what is that?!?) And then, the museum closed while we were looking at The Gates of Paradise (which is a door wrought of some kind of metal and sculpted to depict scenes from the Old Testament of the Christian Bible).

On this day:
In 2003: TEAMS... we LOST.
