March 2004

First | Previous | Next | Current

Wednesday, March 31, 2004--Last night, when I went to test my MachinePlayer on the Instructional Computers. Well, first, let me inform you that my AI can search a depth of 3 in 50 milliseconds and a depth of 4 in 1 second (or somewhere about there). However, on the Instructional Computers (the computers we'll actually be using), the 50 milliseconds became 3 seconds and the 1 second became a minute! That's 60 times slower!!! Man, that's hella slow. Good thing I did all that optimiziation, or I never would only have been able to make a depth of 2.

CS61B Lab... I tested my Machine at the actual lab in attempts to verify whether the slowness was because of the network lag or because the Instructional computers were just slow. They were just slow.

Math 55 Discussion...

So I work frantically to finish my Physics Homework. I finish at 4:50pm, and it's due at 5pm, so I suppose I got lucky? Normally, I wouldn't have procrastinated so much, but lately, I've been obsessed with working on my Machine Player.

CS61B Lecture... I finished my Physics homework just in time for my CS Lecture. Isn't that just lucky? Actually, no, the start time of CS Lecture coincides with the due time for the Physics homework. I suppose you could call it a concidence.

After CS Lecture, I forgot about the Eta Kappa Nu General Meeting, so I went and had dinner. By the time I remembered, I was like "Oh shit!" So I went as fast as I could and got there 50 minutes late. But I didn't miss the Guest Speaker. It was a Professor Graham, who told us about electrical pollution. Apparently, all the non-linear circuit elements in today's modern electronics causes high frequency noise on our standard 60 Hz sine wave that comes from the power companies. Because of capacitive coupling, humans are effected by this electrical noise, and it has vast negative effects on us.

Or, to put it less scientifically, all the electronics we have (especially computers), cause electrical pollution on our power lines, which is harmful to the human body.

Now, recall that on March 17, I had a dream about Sarah. At the end of that dream, Sarah randomly dies because she stayed in an electrical zone too long.

Sarah dying in an electrical zone? Electrical pollution is harmful to the human body? What an amazing--and freakish--coincidence! Damn... now I more than ever feel like I have to protect Sarah... I know! I'll buy her a couple of Graham-Stetzer Filters. That should keep the electrical pollution at safe levels so that Sarah won't randomly die due to staying in an electrical zone too long!

No wait, now I'm just speaking ridiculous garbage.

Then, I wandered around and chatted with people there. I saw Karl Chen for the first time in a long time. Karl is one of my parent's friend's children, and he's most definitely better than me at computers (and most other people, too). Apparently, he's in Eta Kappa Nu, and he told me Alice was trying to get into Berkeley next year. How interesting... It's been so long since I've seen these people.

Then, I got a challenge from a Francis Hsu (who was wearing an HSU shirt, from a University whose initials spell his last name). Apparently, I was to talk about myself for a whole minute with pausing or saying "like", "um", or "uhh". The first time, I barely even begun when I failed. The second time, I talked about playing computer games and about making them, too, and I got to 55 seconds before I said "um", and I failed again. How demoralizing. I tried a third time and talked about how I play the piano, and got interrupted in the middle so that the guy could tell me I made the 1 minute and got the credit. Heh, a challenging challenge indeed!

But not as challenging as Daisy Lee's challenge! (She sang and danced to Britney Spears' Toxic in front of everyone at the first General Meeting...)

Then, I went back home where I did stuff online.

Dice Roll of the Day: 5 + 3 = 8

Anyways, time to clean up my code. Then, I'll be done with it... until the Tournament comes up!

Good Night!
Tuesday, March 30, 2004--For some reason, I almost forgot to wake up and go to Physics 7C Lecture today. Heh. During Physics lecture, I fell asleep and when I woke up, I saw something on the board like beta = v_e / c = k e^2 / hbar c = 1/137.

137!!!

Sarah... I almost said her name aloud when I saw that...

EE40 Lecture... I was diligently working on the Prelab before I fell asleep.

EE40 Lab... our TA never showed up, so after waiting for half an hour (while playing Pinball), we did the lab and finished it in an hour. For some reason, the graph of my input/output was too small.

Daisy: Maybe you plugged in your MOSFET backward?

Heh... apparently, them MOSFETs aren't symmetrical, contrary to the diagrams in the book.

I almost didn't go to Math 55 Lecture, because I was too enraptured by the CS Project. I ended up going anyway...

History 160 Lecture... the class I never sleep through.

Then, after dinner, I had to go back cupcakes for Eta Kappa Nu. I got lost along the way, but I made it in time. Then, I uber-fudged some of the cupcakes. (Fudged with actual chocolate fudge, that is.) Then, I started mixing icings.

Amy: Well, I'm indecisive, so I'd eat that. It's got the best of both worlds.

Now, to work on the CS Project. Good Night, yo!

Dice Roll of the Day: 6 + 4 = 10
Monday, March 29, 2004--Today, I found it difficult to... not wake up. What irony!

Math 55 Discussion...

At lunch... umm... damn!

Physics 7C Discussion... Mmm... Quantum Physics... Sarah?

EE40 Discussion... some people went across the hall and stole the free donuts.

CS61B Lecture... Binary Trees! I believe my MachinePlayer has a chance of winning the Tournament. I just need to work on it.

Hmm... I had dinner and ran into Mark and Ryan, and I saw Kim... and some other people.

Today, when I went fencing, Coach Lee gave me some one on one instruction, which tremendously fixed my form in Saber, and it seemed to double the effectiveness of my bouting. It was interesting. I think I'm getting the hang of Saber now.

Hmm... that's all.

A Year Ago Today: Franklin Faceless Butchers my Sliver Queen. Bernard and Franklin bring me down to 1 Life. Bernard kills Franklin. I get my Sliver Queen back. Bernard forfeits. Amewsing...

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 2 = 6

Now, to work on my MachinePlayer. Good Night, folks!
Sunday, March 28, 2004--Today's the last day of Spring Break. )= But when I get back to Berkeley, I can see her again. (= But she doesn't like me. )= But that's not going to stop me! (=

So many smilie faces... hehe...

Today, I went shoe shopping, and all the shoes sucked. Then, I went shopping for frames at my mom's insistence, even though I don't need new glasses. Those half-framed frames remind me of Joanna's glasses.

Me: Aren't you ever afraid that your lenses will fall out?
Joanna: No.

I still remember her frames had a quite an interesting design on the side. What a pity that she doesn't talk to me anymore.

Then, after working on my CS project some more, I returned to UC Berkeley for my triumphant (not really) return! I went visiting around, and found Justin in Mark & Ryan's room. For some reason, Justin wanted to see Kim... but he didn't get to. Then, we went to dinner at this Korean BBQ place, where I claimed that Justin became more Canadian and Mark became more perverted.

Mark: I'm not more perverted, I'm just more blunt.

Mark: Linda says she only wanted to go to visit Leland with you so she could argue with you...

Intriguing...

Moo.

Nu.

Bored...

I saw the Simpsons today. The prison episode kinda sucked. The England episode was funny, but freakish with the female British version of Homer in the ending.

Anyways... Dice Roll of the Day: 1 + 2 = 3

*sleeps* Good Night!
Saturday, March 27, 2004--I have become obsessed with uber-speeding up my CS project. I want it to win the Tournament. Therefore, it needs to be able to think faster...

A Year Ago Today: I get accepted into Berkeley EECS...

*yawn*

Later that day, I went to Bernard and Kellie's, where we played Bomberman (in one game, I fragged all four of my opponents--Bernard, Kellie, and the two comps). Then, I played some FFTactics.

*T*Battle 14: The battle on the hill... Those damn Summoners! They make me afraid to pack my units close together, which makes it difficult to focus fire with my Ninjas.

Redford got enough AP in Ninja to get 2-Swords, so now he's a dual-wielding Knight. Sweet! That was fast!

Battle 15: The battle in the swamp... monsters... easy...

Battle 16: The battle on the Rooftops of Goug Machine City. I beat it on my first try, though, even though Mustadio refused to equip his guns.

Battle 17: The rescue Agrias mission. I rescued her good. Now she's in my party for good. Excellent! I like Agrias. She's got mad skillz.

Next is the Golgorand Execution Site battle. Meh...
*T*

So thus ends my day. After that, I went home and slept.

Dice Roll of the Day: 2 + 2 = 4

Hmm... Good Night!
Friday, March 26, 2004--In MTG, I made a Wizard deck. It's pretty good. It's not tournament quality, though. Of course, very few things are.

So, Kim shows up online, so I invite her to go play something on Yahoo! Games with me. Then, Netscape complains that Java is not installed (apparently, I accidentally disabled it when I disabled Flash), so while I'm trying to figure out what's wrong, Kim says she has to go, and then she goes.

Me: Grrr...

The good news is, I fixed Java. The bad news is, Flash re-enabled itself. Hmm... it seems these plug-ins are linked. Damn that Flash! I hate it! Stupid ads.

After doing some reading for History 160, I had dinner at Burger King (which reminds me of Carrie... see yesterday's entry), and watched the latest Naruto. Meh... it could have been better.

Now, I'm online. Doesn't today suck?

Dice Roll of the Day: 1 + 6 = 7

*sigh*

...

Oh, right. Good Night!
Thursday, March 25, 2004--I had an eye exam appointment today, so I refrained from playing Video Games et all just so I wouldn't get my eyes messed up and then taking the eye exam and making it seem I needed a stronger prescription. Unless I'm tired, my current eyeglasses will do just fine, thank you.

(Which was confirmed by the eye doctor, by the way.)

So I went to Burger King for lunch today, and there, I saw Carrie Nguyen (and some of her friends whom I don't recognize). Of course, I didn't say hi and draw attention to myself--why would I want to do that? I also saw Cindy Tsau, whom said hi to me as I was heading back to my car. *shrig*

Then, there was reading for History 160. I ate Fire Pot for dinner today. Now, I have to work on my CS Project.

*yawn* What a boring day... Someone come and save me, please!!!

Dice Roll of the Day: 5 + 4 = 9

Optimism is a good thing... I hope.

Good Night!
Wednesday, March 24, 2004--Today, I woke up and played FFTactics...

*T*On my way back to Igros and back, I managed to get Redford up to Ninja. Sweet. I have a Ninja to use against Algus now.

Battle 9: I went straight for the kill against Algus. Damn mages! Damn split battle! Oh, well. I still won.

Thus, I finished Chapter 1 on February 25, Year 1, with a time of 7:02:15 and with Ramza at Level 9.

Hmm... Chapter 2 takes place a year after chapter 1.

Battle 10: The easy Dorter City battle. With Gafgarion and Agrias helping me, how can I LOSE?

Battle 11: The rescue Boco battle... it was easy. Stupid goblins.

Battle 12: The Battle on the Bridge... Heh, Ryan taught me a trick for this battle. Before you enter battle, de-equip all of Gafgarion's gear and make him a Chemist. That way, he's pathetically weak, so that when he betrays you, he's hella easy to beat. What's also amusing is that this battle has three guest characters in it.

I went back to Gariland to get some more knives, because Madeline became a Ninja. On my way back, Ramza became a Ninja, too, so now I have three Ninjas. Sweet.

Battle 13: The rescue Mustadio battle... the first time, I wasn't aggressive enough and the two Black Mages killed Mustadio in two turns, and I lost. Then, for my second try, I killed off one of the black mages right off with 2 of my Ninjas. Then, while Agrias was trying to reach the gate and while my healer was on the other side of the wall casting Revive (my Ninjas have enough Jump to simply climb over the wall), my three Ninjas (with the help of Mustadio) killed off the remaining forces. It was fun.
*T* Yeah, FFTactics is a good game.

The NorCal MTG Regionals is on May 1 and will be in Palo Alto. I'm thinking of going there for fun. I'm also thinking of making Ryan go there so that he can win the SSS some glory. No, glory the metaphysical quantity, not Glory the MTG card.

Other than that, I did some History 160 Reading and worked on my CS61B Project some. It will be good... Mwahahahahahahaha!!!

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 1 = 5

Ahh... Good Night, my dove!
Tuesday, March 23, 2004--Today, I decided to play FFX-2 instead.

*X-2*I went to Mt. Gagazet and saw the infamous Hot Springs scene... It sucked... in a bad way.

I also went to Zanarkand and played matchmaker with the monkeys. It wasn't that bad, but man, these sidequests make FFX-2 so tedious. The 100% had better be worth it!
*X-2*

Heh, I noticed that in games with the Job System like FF5, FFT, or FFX-2, there are lots of abilities which are generally useless. I tend to skip by them to try to get to better abilities faster. It's strange, I think. We need to make the Job System more balanced. Or is knowing what's good and what sucks a part of the strategies involved in the Job System? Kind of like knowing which Materia is good in FF7, huh?

I visited the Math Team today. Here are some highlights, in chronological order:

Lei: Where is everybody? Did Dwayne scare them off already?
Me: Heh, well, Joanna's here. I'm sure that means something.
Joanna: Actually... *reaches for her stuff*

In the end, Joanna stayed, even though I'm sure she's been avoiding me.

Lei: I'm taller than Linda!
Me: No you're not.
Mr. Yim: Okay, you two, stand back to back, and... hey, you're both wearing heels!
Mr. Yim: Linda's taller by this much (about 3 inches)
Lei: No fair, her heels are higher than mine.
Me: Well, I guess you can't call her Little Linda anymore.

Mr. Yim: Linda, what are you doing?
Linda: These old trophies getting dirty make me feel old!
Me: And you're, like, what? Seventeen?
Mr. Yim: Really? I thought you were 14.

Ke: You need to have more Arrogance to do this contest right. You need to have more Arrogance so that when you answer, it sounds like you know what you're doing. I mean, when it comes to math contests, Dwayne's always has Arrogance.
Me: I think you mean Confidence.
People: *laugh*
Me: Confidence, Persistence, and Experience, just like my e-mail said.

Linda and I also visited Miss Yamamoto and looked at her covers for the MAH kids' Groupwork. There are some talented artists at Leland.

Miss Yamamoto: Have you heard? Mr. Schlink is retiring.
Me: Is it for reals this time?
Miss Yamamoto: For reals this time.
Linda: Yeah, he always says he'll retire every year.
Miss Yamamoto: This time, he even signed his forms and sent them in. There's no way he can reverse that now.

Coming back, I basically slacked off, even though I have work to do... darn!

BTW, that stuff that that person posted in my Guestbook is quite amewsing. Heh, it reminds me of on September 9, 2003, when I had "Dwayne is gone home for the weekend," and when I got back, I erased "gone home for the weekend," so it just read "Dwayne is". Then, someone appended "hot!" so it read "Dwayne is hot!"

Dice Roll of the Day: 3 + 3 = 6

Hmm... I think...

Good Night!
Monday, March 22, 2004--Good morning! Today I spent playing FFTactics...

*T*For the record, Battle 4 at Dorter City was the first battle that you hear the song "Decisive Battle" play. And battle 5 was the first time you hear the song "Night Attack"... even though it's in broad daylight.

Battle 7: The second (and final) Miluda Battle. It took me two tries, mainly because of a strategic mistake on my part in the first effort... that and, all my healers were killed off when I couldn't hit the black mages fast enough. Damn black mages!

Battle 8: Ah, the Wiegraf Battle. This is the first battle that plays the song "Antipyretic", my personal favorite. I beat him on the first try, even though he managed to kill several of my characters several times with his Holy Sword abilities.

Now to prepare for the Algus battle... damn that Algus! I hate him!
*T*

Hmm... there's not much I can say about today. It was a boring day, and I had hoped to get more work done, but didn't.

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 1 = 5

Ehh... Good Night, folks!
Sunday, March 21, 2004--Heh... This week's installment of "Limerick Time" was a day early. Isn't that just amewsing? ...wait, no it isn't!

Today, I spent going online and looking at forums and stuff like that and updating my website. Hmm... what a boring day today.

Kim was flickering on AIM today. Hmm...

I ate lunch at McDonald's and dinner at Tainan Diner in Cupertino Village. I also learned from my parents that San Jose is a really long city.

Hmm... Dice Roll of the Day: 5 + 4 = 9

On an unrelated note (wait... all notes are unrelated) Melody actually took the initiative to actually IM me. How... strange. She usually doesn't talk to me much.

The Simpsons today was amewsing... mostly when Homer did his impersonation of a telephone on Hold... but then it got old when he it lasted for more than 30 seconds.

Anyways, I'm bored, and today's Journal entry is fragmented. Good Night!
Saturday, March 20, 2004--Today, I spent playing GunBound. Then, I played Diablo II, but Alan was rushing so damn fast, that I forgot what level I'm at. It's around Level 38, though.

If anyone would like to play GunBound or Diablo II with me, feel free to IM me at Viltris. I'm online most nights... when I'm not "studying" on the 7th floor with the girls...

Then, I did some reading for History 160...

Shortly afterward, I went to Bernard and Kellie's place, where first I played Bomberman with me and Kellie versus three comps. Then, we played Bernard and Kellie 2v1 against me. Then, Kellie wanted to watch me play FFTactics, so I did.

*T*Battle 5: Sand Rat Cellar battle, where you attack from the front door and the side door simultaneously. This time, I beat it on my first try.

Battle 6: Theives' Fort, the Miluda battle. Again, I beat it in my first try.

Cut scene at Igros Castle: Man, I hate Algus. If I were Ramza, I'd just let Delita beat the shit out of him.
*T*

Sounds like a boring day, doesn't it? Well trust me, it wasn't as boring as it sounds.

Limerick Time!

You know what would be cool?
If I saw some people from school.
You ask, "Which one?"
I say, "For fun!"
You reply, "Wrong question, you fool!"

LOL, now that was amewsing.

Dice Roll of the Day: 5 + 2 = 7

You know what else is amewsing? Connie (Chu) finally got around to blocking me. Heh, what took you so long, Conifer!

LOL, Time Stretch... Good Night!
Friday, March 19, 2004--Moo... I don't feel like going to my classes today, but I did so anyways.

CS61B Discussion...

I thought that, since I have all of next week to slack off, I should try to be a good student for these last few hours, so I went to the 7th floor to do some reading... and I saw Kim a lot.

I'm inspired to write some colloquial poetry...

Here's an modification on a limerick Kim once wrote:
There once was a guy named Dwayne,
Whom everyone thought was insane.
He went to the gym
And shouted, "I love Kim!"
That was the story of Dwayne.

Then, I played some GunBound. In one game, I killed this one person, and that person's teammate got pissed, so he dropped down to attack me. Then, I exploded the dirt beneath him, causing him to fall to his death.

Me: You shouldn't have come down.
Him: Fuck you!

In another game (the last game I played today), the two teams both needed one more kill to win, and two of the guys were on really thin ground really close to each other, and it was my turn.

Ally: Kill him!
Me: I have bad aim, though.
Ally: I left the kill for you. Kill him.
Me: *shoots and hits and kills ally* I told you I had bad aim.

On my way out to class, I ran into Kim, who was going home, so we chatted while on the elevator... a short 2-minute chat the preluded a long 9-day weekend.

CS61B Lecture...

Then, I got picked up to go home. On my way out, I ran into Anika.

Me: Have a nice weekend... a nice 9-day weekend.

When I got home, I prompty began playing FFTactics. My second game, the game where I strive for efficiency and low-levels for a new challenge. Here's a battle-by-battle journal... in spoiler text, of course:

*T*Battle 0: This is the battle that you simply cannot lose. I noticed that there really is a Lezales... but I don't think he's unique, but he does have a fixed name. How amusing.

Battle 1: This time, I managed to not have any chars die.

Character names (these are randomly generated and can't be changed):
Stone - not used
Redford - warrior
Rico - not used
Ginger - mage
Juliette - warrior
Madeline - warrior

Afterwards, Ramza had enough JP in Squire so I could switch him to Knight... except I didn't have any Knight armor, so I'd have to wait to get to Igros Castle.

Battle 2: This is the battle where I met Algus. I had two options: (1) Rescue Algus or (2) Defeat the Death Corps. Well, knowing what happened at the end of Chapter 1, I really hate Algus (that guy's a bitch anyway), so I chose to kill the Death Corps. (This is also good because all my guys get +10 Brave.) Unfortunately, I still have to take Algus along with me.

At this point, I bought some Knight armor so both Ramza and Delita could be Knights. Knights are uber-powerful. I believe they are the single best warrior class. (Although, the Ninja's 2-Swords ability makes them twice as good.)

During a random battle that I had, Madeline got enough JP, so I made her a Knight. I also made Redford an Archer and Ginger from a Squire to a Chemist.

Battle 3: Monster battle... easy.

Battle 4: The Dorter City battle... In my first game, this was the first hard battle I fought. This time, I beat it in my first try. It probably has to do with my use of Knights. Knights are good, yo! Of course, I used 3 potions and 3 Phoenix Downs... but still, it was good.

Ah... FFTactics... between this and FF5, I can't decide which is the best FF ever...

Dice Roll of the Day: 2 + 2 = 4

Good Night, my dears!
Thursday, March 18, 2004--Still reeling from the effects of that dream... Help me!

Physics 7C Lecture...

EE40 Lecture...

Math 55 Lecture...

History 160 Lecture... according to Keynesian Theory, in times of bad economy, governments are supposed to run budget deficits.

Then, I went to the Tau Beta Pi meeting and learned some shit about Resumes. Then, I had a chat with Kyrin...

Me: I didn't know you were in EE40. It's like one day I turn around and I'm like "Hey look, it's Karen!"

Wow... so many people are in both HKN and TBP... like Daisy.

Daisy: Don't worry, you're only a 2nd-year. Summer internship's not that important.
Me: Actually, I'm a 1st-year.
Daisy: Oh, then you shouldn't be worrying at all! ...then why are you taking so many 2nd-year classes?

Then, I played Poker with the guys (and two girls who sat at the opposite end of the table). In attempts to attract more people to the game, we played with chips and prizes rather than with real money.

Guy: I'm gonna play the way I play when I'm drunk... I'm not even going to look at my cards, and I'm a bet everything.

Later, as fencing time drew near, I decided to suicide my chips, so I started betting everything without looking. The first time, it was a draw between me and this other guy, so we split the pot 50/50. The second time, 2 other guys were still in, and each of them had a pair of 4's (we were playing Texas Hold 'em), and I had a 6 and a 2 (which I discovered only after betting everything). However, when Nathan dealt the cards in the center, he dealt 4 random cards and one 6, so I managed to win and I ended up with 113 chips.

Me: I call your 2 and raise you one hundred and eleven.
Other guy: Holy shiz!

There were 4 sidepots. Nobody had any idea what was going on. Two rounds later, I finally lost all my chips. It was insane a 15 minute suicide that actually put me in a winning position. The irony.

Then, I went fencing with my foil and I stabbed people. Three bouts, three victories. It was pretty amewsing. My bouts with Niel would have made Matt the Epeeist proud. Niel charged at me several times, and several times, I stopped his charge by lunging into him in such a way that he couldn't hit me.

Hmm... I want to play FFTactics again...

Gooed Night!
Wednesday, March 17, 2004--Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

I distinctly remember waking up depressed today.

It was because last night, I had a dream about Sarah. For some reason, I wanted to kill her in my dream, so I attacked her with a pickaxe, but she still managed to get away. Then, later, I come across this list of people who had recently died, and I see Sarah's name right at the top. I ask and I find out that she stayed too long in an electrical zone and accidentally got shocked to death.

I distinctly remember waking up depressed. Part of it was because Sarah had died in my dream. The other part of it was because the dream reminded me of all the bad things I've done to Sarah in the past. So I resolved to go apologize to dearest Sarah.

Sarah: Are you high?

Oh dear.

Goddamn, between her and Kim, I'm going to go insane faster than I originally though.

I want to become God.

CS61B Lab... Mmm... Hash Tables... I mean Hash Browns...

Math 55 Discussion...

CS61B Lecture...

Afterwards, I went to play Capture the Flag with Eta Kappa Nu. They gave us red and yellow caution tape and told us to wear it on our arms so we could distinguish between the teams. I told Mimi (the Eta Kappa Nu president) that she should wear some caution tape in her hair, like a ribbon.

Mimi: I have lots of ribbons already. I have a whole box of them, but I don't even tie my hair, so what's the point?

In the end, the score was tied 0-0 and our team was about to make the game winning play (using me as a decoy to draw out the one defender--he was uber-fast--so my teammates could get the flag and get the hell out of there). Unfortunately, we ran out of time just as I--the beloved decoy--was caught, so the game ended without either side scoring a single capture. How disappointing...

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 5 = 9

*sigh* So depressed lately... Did the depression trigger the dream, or did my dream trigger my depression? Whatever it is, I want to protect Sarah from this "electrical zone"...

Guud Knight!
Tuesday, March 16, 2004--Physics 7C Lecture...

EE40 Lecture... Prof Sanders has never actually said "MOSFET". He always says something like "M-O-S Transistor" instead. I wonder why.

EE40 Lab...

Late lunch at the Crossroads... Yohan tried to convert me to Christianism.

Math 55 Lecture...

History 160 Lecture... Oh, speaking of which, I have to staple together my notes from the Capitalist Reconstruction in the 20th Century!

After getting back, I basically slacked off and went online and talked to people including but not limited to Justin, Lei, Katty, Alan, &c.

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 3 = 7

Eh?

Send me Limericks! (Or other amewsing poems.)

Good Night!

(Short entry today... I'm tired!)

Monday, March 15, 2004--Happy Birthday Emerald Nguyen and Kristi Tsukida... even though I never see them anymore. *shrig*

Math 55 Discussion... Probability is cool, yo!

Lunch...

Physics 7C Discussion... Relativity is not cool, yo!

EE40 Discussion...

CS61B Lecture... If the world operated on a Stack, it would suck.

So shortly after dinner, I went fencing, learning the way of the Saber.

Afterwards, I came back to the dorms to finish my Math Homework. I went to the 7th floor, and after a while, Tiffany came up.

Me: Tiffany! What are you doing here?
Tiffany: Dwayne! What are you doing here?
Me: ...okay, fair enough.

A Year Ago Today: "You wanna supersize that for 35 cents?" "What happens if someone uses that line in the prostitution industry?"

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 3 = 7

"Slivers are evil and slivers are sly;
And if you get eaten, then no one will cry."

Good Night! Don't let the slivers bite! *bites*
Sunday, March 14, 2004--It's strange... strange indeed... Where did she go?

Today, I went to Montara Beach with Tau Beta Pi, where we were supposed to clean up the beach. Then, we had a picnic, and we ate sandwiches, played frisbee, buried Peter (the TBP President) in the sand (he climbed out Zombie-style, though), and then we went to watch/enjoy the waves. At one point, Karen was trying to get this one guy to give her his camera or something like that, then the wave comes, and Karen just runs screaming for dry land... or is that dry sand?

Anyways, upon my return, I played FFX-2...

Then, I invited Kim to a game of GunBound, to which she claimed she was "too busy studying" or some shit like that. Meh.

After dinner, I... *gets bored*

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 4 = 8

I like headphones. They make everything better.

Good Night!

BTW, I have some addendums for yesterday.

Ach! I burn!

Saturday, March 13, 2004--Today, I woke up and went to Eta Kappa Nu's Photo Scavenger Hunt. It was fun and amusing... highly amusing... imitating a statue with no arms, yes.

Anyways, during our travels, we run into this one girl talking on her cell phone. We came in right when she said,

Girl: I was fucking at Wal-Mart.

I wonder in what context was she using the word "fucking".

Later, while we were travelling, we passed these hobos, one of whom (a woman) said something like,

Hobo Woman: This fucking kid is fucking homeless and it's your fucking fault because you didn't fucking do jack shit.
Me: Wow... what language.

At another point in our travels,
Amy: I just want to go back home and get some food.
Me: Go ahead, I'm not going to stop you.
Amy: Haha, I'll stay.
Me: How can I stop you? You're VP.
Amy: Well, if you were Pres, you could stop me.
Me: But I'm not Mimi.
Amy: Ah, thanks for the clarification, 'cause there is a resemblance.

Mimi wore a pink cowgirl hat. Everyone was making fun of her.
Mimi: You have to wear it with Conviction!
Me: Nice hat.
Mimi: Thank you.

Anyways, after coming back, I played hella Gunbound. It's fun!

Then, I ate dinner, and then I updated my website.

Wow... what a boring day today... (Actually, not really.)

Dice Roll of the Day: 1 + 5 = 6

Ahh... Good Night!

I miss my Kim!

Friday, March 12, 2004--The Final Fantasy Tactics soundtrack is hella good! I'm listening to it as I... type... this...

CS61B Discussion...

There was a 3-week hiatus on Physics 7C Labs, because we're done with most of them, and the last two are scheduled toward the end... so that's good. I have less work to do.

I went to the Tau Beta Pi Bent Polishing. I heard that, after people came and left over a period of 6 hours, the Bent was hella shiny. I have yet to see the pictures of it.

So... after doing Physics, I started working on the AI for the CS61B project... man, it's tiring!

CS61B Lecture... Hash tables... Mmm... Hash Browns...

Then, after screwing online for a while and eating dinner with the 6th Floor peoples, I went to Tau Beta Pi's Taboo Night, where we played Taboo. It was fun.

Clue-giver: Okay, it's two words. What do you keep time with?
Guesser: A watch!
Clue-giver: What's man's best friend?
Guesser: A dog!
Clue-giver: Okay, now put them together!
Guesser: Dogwatch!
Clue-giver: NO!!!
*other team bursts into laughter and continues laughing for the next minute*

Me (as clue-giver): Okay, it's stuff that you don't want, so you throw it out.
Guesser: Garbage!
Me: Another word for it!
Guesser: Junk!
Guesser: Waste!
Guesser: Crap!
Guesser: Shit!
Guesser: Refuse!
Me: No, a simple word!
Guesser: ...
Guesser: ...
Guesser: ...trash?
Me: Finally.

Yeah, it was a hilarious night.

[Addendum 8/30/2005] This was also the night I met Karen. She was at Taboo Night, and apparently she had memorized all the cards. Also, she wore this clip in her hair, and I asked her if it was a hidden ninja weapon. "This? Probably."

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 5 = 9

Game Over!

...Good Night!
Thursday, March 11, 2004--Physics 7C Lecture... (yes, I know I'm cutting right to the chase... I just don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.)

EE40 Lecture...

Today, I had lunch with Kim!

Actually, what happened was that I was sitting at a table by myself, eating, and Anika shows up and asks if she and her friends can sit with me... so they did. So it was me, Anika, Kim, and two other 7th floor girls...

Anika suspected that her food was contaminated by meat. She's a vegetarian.

Kim: This table is unbalanced... *shouts across the table to me* Hello, down there!

Math 55 Lecture...

History 160 Lecture...

Prof Pearson: So was it worth it for us to have spent the last two or three hours on an episode that lasted only a few years? Personally, I think no.
*class laughs*

So... umm... what was the point again?

Prof Pearson: This isn't summer camp for building self-esteem. If you wanted that, you should have gone to Palo Alto.
*class cheers and claps*
Prof Pearson: Here, we do things the old school way.

Then, I had dinner.

Other than that...

Dice Roll of the Day: 2 + 5 = 7

Gooooooooood Night!
Wednesday, March 10, 2004--Spring began precisely on Monday. That's when it first warmed up at Berkeley this year. The weather's so freakin' hot now! (Perverted dude: I think [censored] is hot!) Right...

CS61B Lab... There was no homework this week, so when I finished early, I left early and bought my EE40 Reader.

Math 55 Discussion... the bonus question on the quiz was about Minesweeper. It was quite amewsing.

Lots of boring stuff in between...

Me: Hey, you know the movie "The Passion of Christ"?
Christine: Yea.
Me: Well, how about
Me: "The Passion of Christine"?
Christine: Hahaha!
Christine: It'd be a movie about eating.

That Christine... so amewsing...

CS61B Lecture... William joined Jacob and I to do the project.

After that... umm... I had dinner with Mark and Ryan, who later left and I ended up finishing dinner with Jennifer and Stacy and Yohan and Jason and... and most of the rest of the 6th floor, actually.

Anyways, there are things that I need to do. Later!

Dice Roll of the Day: 6 + 1 = 7

*yawn* Love & Hate... and apathy...

My Sorrow, My Desire...

Good Night!
Tuesday, March 9, 2004--Here's a conversation from FFX...
Lulu: If you want everything, you'll end up with nothing.
Tidus: But I want everything.

A Year Ago Today: I get fortune cookies that say, "Good news will be brought to you by mail," and "Sing and rejoice, fortune is smiling on you."

Today, I finally managed to wake up for my Physics 7C Lecture. Must be the light... or the heat... or Spring. I'm more awake in the sun.

EE40 Lecture... I slept.

EE40 Lab... it went by so quick that I had time to eat Lunch at the Crossroads and ran into Christine.

Christine: It's like, everytime I come here, I see you.
Me: You don't come here very often, do you?
Christine: No.
Me: Ah, that must be why.

Math 55 Lecture...

History 160 Lecture...

Anyways, that's pretty much it for today's worth of events. I know, there aren't a lot of them. In any case, I have homework to finish. See you later!

Dice Roll of the Day: 4 + 5 = 9

Good Night!

Currently listening to: Suteki Da Ne from FFX
Monday, March 8, 2004--Sliver Week at MTG.com! Woot! I am a Sliver!!!

Anyways, last night, I was talking to Kim, trying to get to know her better, trying to figure out what her hobbies are. Apparently, she used to play Diablo II, even though she never played on b.net before. So I told her she should come online and play with us, so she agreed to it, but it turns out that her Diablo II (actually, LoD), was pirated so she couldn't get on B.Net. LOL, sucks!

Then, today, while waiting for the elevator, she actually apologized to me for not being able to play with me. Wow... Well, that's Kim for you.

Math 55 Discussion...

I posted something on AO.

Physics 7C Discussion... Relativity Paradoxes... so amewsing.

EE40 Discussion... we got our mudterms back... meh...

CS61B Lecture... apparently, we have to read Goodrich now... I mean... Goodlich.

Then, I went fencing. I like the Saber. I slash people!

Me: You know what would be bad? Fencing at Relativistic speeds.
Zach: Yeah, that would be really hard to judge. It would be hard to tell who attacked first.

In case you didn't get that joke, read up on Relativity... and then understand it.

Anyways, I have math homework to do. Later!

Dice Roll of the Day: 1 + 4 = 5

As per the spirit of Sliver Week, I'm going to post two Sliver cards I made up.

Dwayne Sliver - Cost: WUBRG
Legendary Creature - Human Sliver
3: Search your graveyard for a Sliver card, reveal that card, and put it into your hand.
"I have embraced the slivage!"
7/7

Christine Sliver - Cost: WUBRG
Legendary Creature - Human Sliver
Whenever Christine Sliver is dealt damage, you may put that many 1/1 colorless Sliver creature tokens into play.
When Christine Sliver is put into a graveyard from play, you may put up to 7 1/1 colorless Sliver creature tokens into play.
What is a sliver but a fragment of the Queen?
7/7

Good Night! Until next time, may you become one with the Sliver!
Sunday, March 7, 2004--So I had to help Franklin study for his Chemistry Test... so I did. It sucked...

By the way, I have a new forum. It's a lot better than the old one. Right now, it's a little small and empty, but there's plenty of room to grow. Visit it and reserve your SN today!

Also, I played some Golden Sun. Then, I went back to Berkeley.

*yawn* Such a short day today.

Apparently, the word "KILL" can be transformed into the word "KIM" simply by connecting the two L's.

Alan: not really

If you insist.

Limerick Time!

The new girl was bored,
So she went and bought a sword.
But the sword's not a toy.
She nearly killed a boy
By smashing up his new Ford!

Okay, that one sucked for sure. I'm still accepting Limerick submissions!

Dice Roll of the Day: 2 + 1 = 3

Moo.

Good Night!
Saturday, March 6, 2004--*yawn* ...I need a plan.

A Year Ago Today: Today, I ate lunch at KFC, somewhere I haven't gone in a long time. It's kind of ironic. You would have expected me to eat at some good restaurant, right? Well, I didn't. I'm not a gourmet... umm... person... type... thing... ellipses...

Kimaera!

I got a haircut today.

Also, we went to dinner with Bernard and Kellie's family at Fresh Choice. It was... umm... fresh. I am at a loss for words today.

My appetite shrunk, though, which is good. I was filled really easily eating the food at Fresh Choice.

Then, Kellie and Bernard and their parents came to our place, where Kellie, Frank, and I watched Naruto, and Bernard, Franklin, and I played Proliferation. It's a good game! Really! Just a little old and turnbased and non-internet, that's all. Plus, it's free! (No, I'm not a sellout. Why would they hire a guy to advertise a free game? It's free and it's good. That's all there is too it. There is such a thing as a free game.)

Franklin made a couple really silly mistakes early on, and Bernard, who picked a starting tile right next to him eliminated him early on. Then, Bernard and I started duking it out while the computers fought amongst themselves. At some points, I took advantage of a weakened computer and conquered some of his zones. (I named two of the computers "Sword" and "Shield". Franklin named the third "Asswipe".) Then, when Bernard and I had formed a huge borderline between two zones, one of the comps dropped 6 ICMBs on Bernard's border zone, killing 50 of his 60+ armies. Naturally, I broke through after that and made quite a lot of gain before Bernard was about to hold another border.

Also, I refined my strategy for that game. Strategies are good.

Then, I updated my website, asked Tiffany if I "wear my sleeve on my heart" (Tiffany: "Umm... isn't it the other way around?"), then I went to bed.

Oh, wait, I'm still awake... Good Night!

Dice Roll of the Day: 5 + 3 = 8
Friday, March 5, 2004--Okay, I lied. Dice roll betting does not resume today, because I'm more tired than I thought.

CS61B Discussion...

After lunch, I went to the Physics 7C Lab... no, we're not doign any relativity labs... although that would be cool. We did a lab on Polarized light. Polarized glasses are cool!

I finished early, and so headed off to my CS61B Lecture... There, I met up with Jacob, who will act as my partner for the project #2. We played the game (Network, the game for the project... see Wednesday entry), then we figured out how the work could be divided. So it starts...

Then, I went home. There, I played Network with Franklin, just to test out strategies etc etc.

Then, I played with Starz' new AI for Solar Vengeance. It's actually pretty good, but I figured I could improve, and I did, so now the new AI is 3 times more vicious. It actively seeks out enemy ships, then rapes them... the, um, non-sexual way, that is.

Me tired...

Here's an unbettable Dice Roll of the Day: 6 + 4 = 10

Ahh... the Night be Good!
Thursday, March 4, 2004--I woke up and managed to get to my Physics 7C Lecture half an hour late... just like yesterday! Damned Relativity... it's so counter-intuitive. It's kinda like how Goodstein summarized the basis of Thermodynamics (Zeroth Law) by saying "temperature makes sense". Well, you can sum up the basis of relativity (Relativity of Simultaneity) by saying time doesn't make sense.

EE40 Lecture... I found it difficult to pay attention to the Semiconductors, although I did get that holes move in a sea of electrons, and in doing so, they act as a positive charge.

Lunch at the Crossroads...

Anika: Hey, Dwayne, how was your midterm?
Me: I was on Tuesday.
Anika: Oh... sorry... so... how was it?
Me: I think I did all right.

Math 55 Lecture... Prof Olga Something (who hijacked Prof Demmel's lecture on Tuesday, because he was taking a trip) was lecturing today. It was pretty bad (although not that bad for a first time lecturer). Good thing Prof Demmel's coming back next Tuesday.

History 160 Lecture...

Then, I went to the Eta Kappa Nu office so I could go to dinner with the Bridge people. (Bridge being the name of the committee I'm on... we take photographs of stuff... I think... and other interesting stuffs...) It was an... interesting experience...

"So... I have to go south to get to the North Gate? How counter-intuitive."

Dice Roll of the Day: 2 + 3 = 5

It's kind of funny, considering that I haven't talked about fencing yet.

Me: Hey, Anton. I've converted to Saberism. I fence Saber half the week now.
Anton: Oh, really?
Me: Yes... unfortunately, it was at the beginning of the week, so you missed it.

Coach Lee was gone today, so we did our drills without her. It's amazing how self-sufficient the Fencing Club can be, but isn't. A lot of people didn't show up today... my guess is mudterms? Anyways, I was, for some reason, tired today, very lethargic. I found it difficult to rack up the energy I needed to fence well, although I did pull off some weird moves.

Anyways, that's it for tonight. I bid you farewell.

...Good Night!
Wednesday, March 3, 2004--I just barely managed to wake up and get to CS61B Lab... half an hour late, but it's all good, since I finished so fast. It involved throwing Exceptions. Exceptions are Throwable. I am a Ninja. I will throw this Exception at you!

Math 55 Discussion... last night, I had 2 BSed proofs and 1 blank proof. After discussion, and listening to Jeremy (the GSI) explain shit, I had 1 BSed proof and no blank proofs. Then, the quiz was pretty easy.

Doing CS Homework...

I fell asleep, then woke up and realized I was late to CS61B Lecture, so I got up and rushed there.

Me: Has it ever happened to you where you fell asleep and you woke up and realized that you were late to class?
Lily: I think so. Why?
Me: I just woke up, and I'm half an hour late.
Lily: Half an hour late! What's the point? Just skip it.

I ended up going anyway, and apparently, Project 2 spec is up, and we have to write an AI for a game. It's such a complicated game...

After dinner at the Crossroads (Ryan put hot sauce in my chicken while I was gone... I didn't even notice.), I decided to play around with the game. It's actually pretty fun, but it's a hella complicated game. It'll be hella tough to write an AI for this.

So I invited Jason over to try out the game, and I think I've already developed a few strategies for it. Mwahahaha!!! Nice!

Now, I have EE40 Homework to do, so I should probably leave you now. Good Night!

Dice Roll of the Day: 3 + 3 = 6
Tuesday, March 2, 2004--Today, I chose to sleep in, skipping my Physics 7C Lecture, so I could be well-awake for the EE40 Mudterm... which I slaughtered!!! It was easy, but there was freakishly a lot of white space on that paper...

A Year Ago Today: After lunch, the EE40 Lab was cancelled to give us time to recover from the mudterm.

So I didn't have class until 2, which was the

Math 55 Lecture...

History 160 Lecture...

After dinner, I went to the Eta Kappa Nu meeting, and got two challenges completed. They were riddles. Here they are:
  1. Given 1, 3, 4, and 6, using each number exactly once and using only +, -, *, and /, make 24. (Also, try this with 3, 3, 7, 7, or 3, 3, 8, 8.)
  2. A king had 1024 bottles of wine, and one of them was poisoned, but he didn't know which. He was going to have a party the next day, and he wanted to figure out which bottle of wine was poisoned. Now, he has 10 slaves (all of whom are, unfortunately, expendable), but unfortunately, since the poison takes roughly a whole day to kick in, he can't just send his slaves in to test wine until one of them dies. How can he have all his slaves test out the wine so that he can figure out which bottle is poisoned in just one day?
Have fun!

Then, I went fencing and fenced electric Saber. Either the guys were going easy on me, or I have a decent amount of skill, because I was getting in so many parry-ripostes. I didn't win a single bout, though. (I only fenced two.)

Severin gave me two pieces of advice:
  1. Attack with vigor!
  2. Watch your distance!
Yes, Saber is really tricky...

Dice Roll of the Day: 3 + 1 = 4

Now, if you'll excuse me... Good Night!
Monday, March 1, 2004--What a tiresome day...

A Year Ago Today: TEAMS... we LOST.

Math 55 Discussion... I was working on my Math homework in class... hehe... that's bad, right?

Lunch at the Crossroads...

Physics 7C Discussion... Relativity... ugh!

I also found out today that I got a perfect score on my Physics mudterm. Hmm... that's not good because no one should ever get a perfect score on a curved test. This is Battaglia's first time teaching Physics 7C, so... who knows what kind of shit he might pull on the second mudterm?

EE40 Discussion...

CS61B Lecture... talking about how to make an AI for a game... unfortunately, Game Trees only work for really really simple games. It's better to memoize the winning positions, and go from there... but that still only works for comparatively simple games.

Today, I went fencing, and I have converted to Saberism. I no longer stab. I hack and slash.

Dice Roll of the Day: 1 + 1 = 2

Argh!!!

Oh, well. Anyways, have fun doing whatever the heck you're doing. I'm going to sign off now. Good Night!
