Happy Halloween!
A Year Ago Today:
- Amy dressed up as "Amy". Stephanie dressed up "Stephanie". Yily dressed up as "a student".
- Stephanie Huang makes her first appearance in my journal.
- Yily Liu makes her first appearance in my journal.
- Candy Hand!
EE20N Lab was cancelled this morning on the basis of what the hell is that?
No, actually it was because we had a mudterm coming up, so Prof Ross decided to let the people study.
Lunch at the Crossroads...
I played Diablo II
so much today... well, not really. In two hours, I did some cow-killing and went from level 31 to level 34. Killing cows with Whirlwind is
hella fun.
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion...
Then, I got dressed in my Halloween costume and started scaring the shit out of people. It's the same thing as last year, with the black cloak, black clawed gloves, and face paint. See this
picture.
One girl on the 5th floor looked at me for a few seconds. Then she screamed and was like "Ack! His face looks scary! He looks real!" Lily replied, "Oh, and everyone else looks fake?"
On the sixth floor, after visiting Tammy's room (she didn't recognize me until I spoke up), Emma tried to scare us from behind. I turned aorund and she saw my face, she totally freaked out and screamed.
So I'm walking down the 7th floor hall, over to Kim, who is standing in front of her room.
Kim: Hello.
Me: ...
Kim: Oh, dear.
Me: ...
Kim: Do I know you?
Me: ...Perhaps
Kim: Oh, hi Dwayne.
Kim was the only person with a digital camera who could take a picture of me in costume, but it was currently being charged. Oh well.
Ryan had already seen the costume before, so he knew it was me, and Mark knew it was me because I'm the only person who would visit their room at random intervals in costume.
Tiffany somehow recognized me "by the way I walk". WTF?
Other than that, no one else could recognize except by my voice... so I had to talk to get recognized.
So then I went to the party at Zach's place with the fencers. Unfortunately, because I wasn't wearing my glasses, I was having a hard time seeing. The only reason I found the place was because I heard Elvira's voice, and so followed it. Then, when I took off my gloves, I put one on her head.
First, we played Goldeneye (the 007 game for the N64), Me, Zack, Brandon, and Elvira. Somehow, Elvira managed to blow herself up with a Remote Mine. Ehh... Then when Zack had 7 points and I had 4, he commented "Wow, I thought you would be better at this game considering you have such strong opinions about this game." Then a minute later, I won with a score of 11, and Zach had but 10 kills. Long before the end, Elvira refused to respawn. She got the award "Most Cowardly".
Then, all sorts of shit happened, including but not limited to me washing off the face paint.
I played BS with Christina, Elvira, Brandon, and Eric. I said "Bullshit!" Then, everyone else started saying "Bullshit!" Then, Christina, who supposedly never swears, said "Bullshit!" and she gasped and was like "Oh, my god!" covering her mouth and all.
Elvira won by hiding the fact that she had only 4 cards left, then playing all four of those cards. (She played 4 fours and wasn't lying about it.) But then, there was controversial move where Elvira, on her second last to turn, said "Four Kings" but actually played four Kings and an Ace. Everyone was saying that she cheated, but I simply pointed out that I've played with people who have BS'ed the number of cards they put down, thereby supporting Elvira.
I also saw the movie "Run, Lola, Run", a parody of which I have apparently seen on Seven Days... Intriguing...
A few days ago, while I was trying to close the curtains, the sun blinded me and it made a blur in my eyes in the shape of an N and an arrow pointing to the left. Justin comments, "So North is to the left, eh?" At that point, it wasn't, but today, I asked Zach which way was north so that I could find my way back to my dorm. He told me, and as I was exiting his apartment, North was to the left, and I remembered the blur in my eyes. Then, as I went onto the street, north was (again) on my right, even though I turned around so many times getting out of the complicated complex. Whoa...
Anyways, when I got back to my room, I took off my cloak and gloves and went to bed. Good Night!
Whew! Long day today.
Thursday, October 30, 2003--The cow likes to poke people... Die, cow, die!
A Year Ago Today:
- "Sodom Hussein"
- Delivering recorded CAMLs to Miss Yamamoto during the lunchtime MAH Intramural = run-in with Diane
Physics 7B Lecture...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Math 54 Lecture... which I skipped because I was working on my unfinished EE homework...
Just before going to EE Lecture (I finish my homework, of course), I go over to Cory to turn it in, and on my way there, I meet none other than Melody! So after sharing a couple words, I run off and go to Cory to turn in my homework. Anyways, she told me she couldn't go to the lecture on account of a CS project, or something like that...
EE20N Lecture... I left in about ten minutes because the lecture was all review and there was no Melody to keep me at the lecture. Nadia comments, "Like, when Melody isn't at lecture, you just get up and leave. It cracks me up."
So I was reading Plato's Phaedrus on the 7th floor lounge... It's good stuff!
Greek Literature...
Finally, Joyce is un-busy enough to come with me to dinner at the Crossroads. During dinner, Anika (Kim's roommate) comes and sits down at the same table as us...
You know it's a bad thing when Kim's roommate acknowledges me more often than Kim herself. (She said "bye" to me as Joyce and I left... something I didn't expect her to do...)
CS61A Lab... I finished in an hour because of a slight trickiness... but it's all good!
] (define sarah (make-person 'sarah))
sarah
] (ask sarah 'ask '(go to hell))
(would you please go to hell)
Amusing...
I like naming shit after Sarah because I got bored of naming them Bob and Joe.
Fencing today... Afterwards, I hung out with the guys at the Yogurt Park and talked about a lot of random stuff. One of those things is how I don't like to keep score in fencing, because I don't care about winning. I just want to fence. See, fencing without score without judges is fencing in its purest form. There is no winning or losing. Just fencing. Granted, maybe I just say that because I'm losing, but hey, there's nothing wrong with not being a good fencer!
A second thing began like this: "I'm not sure whether she's straight or lesbian on the basis of--what the hell is that?" "On the basis of what the hell is that?" "No,
that!" Don't you just love when someone interrupts themselves and the sentence still makes sense. Another one of the guys was saying how what if there was a professor who said, "The only thing you need to know for your exam is--naked woman!"
Anyways, I went back to my dorm
really late at night, and so I went to bed directly. Good Night my loyal (albeit non-existent) audience!
Wednesday, October 29, 2003--Sorry I haven't updated in a while. Now... if only I could remember
why I haven't updated...
A Year Ago Today:
- Diane catches me off guard at the CAML.
- "Warning! Open Trench." "Do you see an open trench around here?"
- Ihui Wu makes her first appearance on my journal. (Actually, she only gets mentioned in passing.)
- "The Camel is our god, and we have to bring lunch to feed the Camel."
Physics 7B Discussion... we had a quiz, which I hella aced!
Lunch at the Crossroads...
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion... we had a quiz, which I hella aced!
After classes, Justin wanted me to return an item to him over Diablo II. While I was at it, I upgraded to the new Diablo II 1.10 patch. This version, apparently, is a
lot harder than the previous version, but you seem to get better experience, probably to balance out the increased difficulty. Anyways, at this time, I level up from level 26 to level 31 in one friggin' day! Although I had fun Whirlwinding everyone, I realize that I've been playing Diablo II too long. I slack off too much, sometimes... Sometimes, I need someone responsible to take care of me and keep me in line... Preferably a cute girl, because I'll most likely listen to a cute girl...
Anyways, after spending until 3am doing EE homework, I went to bed. Good Night!
Tuesday, October 28, 2003--Physics 7B Lecture...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Reading Thucydides...
Math 54 Lecture...
EE20N Lecture... Melody came in and immediately sat down right next to me... I thought she never comes on Tuesdays... Oh, I'm not complaining. (=
Greek Literature...
Dinner at the Crossroads...
CS61A Discussion...
There's not much commentary on my website because I'm apathetic. Happy now? Actually, the things I care about, I tend to mention the least...
Justin was writing a program that tests if a word has all capital letters. Over AIM...
Justin: Give me random crap to test my program on.
Me: k
Me: BOB
Me: BLAh
Me: KILLrOY
Me: KIMISCUTE
Justin: Good one!
Amusing...
Hey, she
is.
Anyways, apparently Jennifer has been sick since yesterday. Poor Jennifer...
That's all I have to say. Have a very Good Night!
Monday, October 27, 2003--Thanks to Daylight Savings Time ending, I actually was able to wake up on time today!
Physics 7B Discussion...
Lunch at the Crossroads... today, they served
the best turkey sandwiches (with gravy) at the Blue Plate Special. It was the best stuff I've eaten in a
long time.
EE20N Discussion... There was an empty seat next to Melody, except there was no seat, so I sat elsewhere. I hope she doesn't mind.
CS61A Lecture...
Prof Hilfinger: You can submit Project #2 and we'll still run a sanity test for you.
Me: Sanity tests, huh? I still can't believe I haven't failed any yet.
Tracy: *laughs*
Math 54 Discussion...
I went back to my dorm and
finished Enigma! Muahahaha! The funny thing is that 19 test cases runs in 24 seconds on
my computer, but when I connect to the instructional Sun machine, it runs in only
two seconds. And everybody was saying how the SSH thing is slow!
Dinner... when I went down, I ran into Kim in the courtyard...
perfect timing!
Kim was also at the 6th Floor momentarily looking at our decorations. I said hi.
I went fencing, and Coach Lee gave me a private lesson. Haha, my form is getting better now.
After fencing, I went to the 7th Floor Lounge to do math homework, and I ran into Kim again, so I said hi.
"I am losing myself!"
--Cyborg Ninja from
Metal Gear Solid
Anyways, after coming back to my dorm at about midnight, Justin gave me a Treads of Cthon, Chance Guards, and a Nightsmoke in Diablo II. These are good equipment,
especially the Treads of Cthon!
Anyways, that's all I have to say for today. Good Night, y'all!
Sunday, October 26, 2003--Daylight Savings Time ends today! Woohoo! I got an extra hour!
So where were
you at 2:30 in the morning? Both of them?
A Year Ago Today: Leland Homecoming!
Anyways, I woke up early to go help the Fencing Club clean up the stadium.
Damn there was
hella trash there, and that was just the Alumni section. The student section was even worse! Never again will I trash the Stadium again, not even with my one cup.
After cleaning the stadium, I went straight to brunch at the Crossroads, at which I saw Kim wearing a sleeveless shirt.
Afterwards, I played a bunch of FFTactics and then later did some homework. I also did some reading in the 7th Floor Lounge and was able to confirm with Anika that it was indeed she who woke me up on Monday (even though technically, she didn't).
Anyways, Good Night!
Saturday, October 25, 2003--I owe you some updates.
A Year Ago Today: Jabberwocky!
Today, I woke up early and got a ride from Coach Lee to UCSC to fence at the tourney.
We managed to convince Elvira to fence Advanced instead of Novice by telling her that Advanced starts an hour later, so she can get breakfast. Amusing.
I lost every bout, but whatever. It was a good experience. I had fun and my skills are improving, so I'm happy. Coach Lee said that I have the model for the fencing mentality--I don't care about winning or losing, only about fencing itself.
Incidentally, Coach Lee said that I remind her of her when she first started, in that we got the theory and the mindset down really quickly, but were having trouble mastering the mechanics. Heh, so I suppose I am one of her favorites, then?
One good match was the infamous lefty VS lefty match in Novice Foil when Jeremiah went 1v1 against Yan Min. It
looked like a regular match, but it felt weird to both of them since they are both lefties.
Also, in Elvira's first elimination match, she was losing 5-9, but then almost made a comeback, coming up to 9-9 before the other guy scored a point and won. We were all so disappointed that Elvira almost won but didn't.
Cal sweeped Novice Foil. Mike Liu wins first place. Mark Chen comes second, and Jeremiah was third. Incidentally, Mike believes that Jeremiah might have been able to beat him. However, apparently, the two of them have never fenced before.
Mike Sim, in the semi-finals of Advance Foil, beat the first-seeded guy in a
major upset, only to lose to the third-seeded guy in the finals (Mike was fourth-seeded). Well, Silver is still pretty good.
Anyways, when I finally get back to Berkeley, it's only 11pm, but I'm
so friggin' tired. Yet, somehow, I still manage to hold a conversation with Jennifer, I think... I actually don't remember...
Anyways, I went to bed, and Good Night!
Friday, October 24, 2003--
Happy Birthday Cindy!
Whee! That was fun!
After waking up a little later just because I could, I went to my EE20N Lab...
After lunch, CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion...
I played Diablo II today... possibly a little
too much... where a little probably means a lot.
Anyways, I'm going fencing at a tournament tomorrow at UCSC, so I'm going to have to go to bed earlier. Anyways, Good Night!
Thursday, October 23, 2003 - Addendum--Interestingly enough, on Tuesday night, I found posted on my message board in front of my room in cursive handwriting: "dwayne is so hot!" accompanied by what appeared to be "I [heart] U". Intriguing...
Unfortunately, the whole message board was cleared this afternoon.
Anyways, Good Night for reals!
Thursday, October 23, 2003--I actually woke up today!
Physics 7B Lecture...
Breakfast at the Golden Bear...
Turning in homework for EE20N...
I've been working on the CS Project throughout the day... Enigma... The Ultimate Encryption Program is coming...
Math 54 Lecture, during which I read for Greek Literature.
EE20N Lecture... Melody came and sat by me... probably because I saved a seat for her.
After a break, Greek Literature...
Dinner... Joyce apologized over AIM for not being able to go to dinner due to being busy with schoolwork or something like that. It's nice to know that she still cares...
CS61A Lab...
After barely finishing Physics homework, I went fencing. Today is our last practice before the big tournament on Saturday. I am still a newbie! Granted, I am a newbie with a good coach, but I'm still a newbie. Still, I need to work on my tactics
and my technique.
Anyways, that ends my night. Good Night!
Wednesday, October 22, 2003--Oversleeping is a
bad habit.
I must overcome!
Physics 7B Lab, where I hooked up some light bulbs and messed up on the quiz. It went pretty badly, but oh well.
Lunch at the Crossroads...
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion, where I aced
this quiz.
Throughout the day, I've been working on EE homework and my Greek Literature Essay. Finally,
long after dinner (which I ate at the crossroads... apparently Mark eats pizza slow...), I finished my EE homework
and my essay, so I decided to celebrate by playing Diablo II, which I played with Alan for 2 hours and 40 minutes and killed Diablo. Hmm... I think I played Diablo II too much. I
still have a CS project to do as well as some reading to read.
Anyways, I must go to bed soon, so I shall wish you Good Night!
Tuesday, October 21, 2003--I overslept
again, but I managed to make it on time to...
Physics 7B Lecture...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Math 54 Discussion...
During that discussion, I came to the conclusion that MegaZeux is too rigid in structure and too redundant, and every time I want to make a change, it would take
way too much work, so I decided to scrap MegaZeux in favor of Java. Demons will now be coming out on Java, yo!
EE20N Lecture...
Throughout the whole day, I've been working on CS homework.
Greek Literature...
Dinner at the Crossroads...
CS61A Discussion...
Can you believe it? I spent
two hours debugging my CS code only to find out that I missed a "list" statement somewhere. Argh!
Anyways, that's the general description of the whole day. CS, CS, and more CS...
Incidentally, not only are CS the initials for Computer Science, but it's also the initials for Counter Strike and Cindy Su.
Ah... Good Night!
Monday, October 20, 2003--I had a hard time waking up today... probably because I've been sleeping in on weekends. That's a bad thing.
Physics 7B Discussion...
Read some Thucydides in the library...
Group Advising Session for the schedule thing coming up. Gastpar provided us with pizza while we were being advised, so I didn't spend a meal on lunch today. Heh, because I'm a freshman, I'm easy to advise. Most my courses were pre-determined a long time ago.
The way I see it is that since I'm a freshman, the classes are easier now, so I can take more of them without that much of a problem. Hence, the full coureload. When I get to upper-division and the classes start getting harder, then maybe I should consider just a standard courseload, but for now, full courseload is good.
I went back to the dorm to read Thucydides some more. Then, at 12:15pm, I fell asleep in the 7th floor lounge. Fifteen minutes later, I woke up suddenly, and I
think Anika had just entered the room, but for some reason, my memory of the event is extremely fuzzy. It is possible that I wasn't wearing my glasses at the time.
Girl: Are you okay?
Me: Yes. *looks at watch* Whoa! I gotta go. Thanks for waking me up, even though you didn't wake me up.
EE20N Discussion... I sat with Melody again... I don't remember why...
CS61A Lecture... I managed to stay awake for this one!
Math 54 Discussion... Normally, I'm able to stay awake for these. Oh, well. I guess that's what happens when I don't sleep in 61A.
Upon returning, I went to sleep in my bed and stayed asleep for over an hour. Damn...
Dinner at the crossroads...
Finished reading the Thucydides readings we had to do for tomorrow...
Fencing... Today, we mostly did drills to prep for the Tournament coming up. I'm not that good. I need to work on my technique, my reaction time, and tactics. However, whenever I score a touch, I seem to do so out of pure instinct and some luck. I
suppose that's a good thing, but I'm going to have to work extra hard this week.
We also did a meditation-like exercise. "Bellguard... bellguard... bellguard? ...bellguard!" "It's just a freakin' bellguard! What's so special about it?" "Hey, I'm meditating on this bellguard here."
Anyways, coming home, I finished up my math homework, went online and did stuff, and went to bed pretty late. I need to do something about that.
Anyways, Good Night to you all!
Sunday, October 19, 2003--Today, I woke up and made significant progress on my Pandora Essay. Hehe... "signifant progress".
After that, I ate lunch, which consisted of chinese beef noodles, cooked by my mom. Very tasty!
After working on the essay some more and playing some Mario Party 3 (out of boredom) and Diablo 2 (with the help of Justin, I slew Coldworm and Duriel; he proved to me two things: 1) that I no longer need fear Lightning enchanted creatures and 2) I
can take down Coldworm and Duriel by myself quite easily), I headed back to Berkeley, remembering to take my Halloween costume components with me.
Heh, the parenthetical remark in that last paragraph is longer than the main point of the paragraph.
After arriving at Berkeley, I ate dinner, finished the CS61A quiz, and did some random stuff online.
There's not much to say, really. I often don't have much to say. When people tell me that my journal is boring, I suppose it's true.
Anyways, Good Night!
Saturday, October 18, 2003--"It looks more like a deformed Pac-man." --Dwayne, in reference to the "circle" Prof Ross drew.
Today, I woke up and, shortly after brunch, I watched the Cal VS UCLA game. We lost, but at least we made it to overtime, meaning it was close. What happened? Our team was absolutely fantastic against USC. Now, we're so mediocre.
The best part was at the end, with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter. UCLA was leading 20 to 12, and then we made a touchdown. Then, we made the two-point conversion, getting us into overtime. Then, in overtime, UCLA made a field goal, and we tried to do the same, except a spectacular failure of a passing play brought us outside field goal range, so when we kicked, it hit the left goalpost and bounced off. If only that kick were a few more inches to the right...
Anyways, after watching the game, I did some work on my Pandora essay. Then, I played some Diablo 2, and now I'd like some assistance killing Coldworm. It's not that I can't beat Coldworm by myself. It's simply that I don't want to. He's got a room packed with so many maggots, it's just overwhelming. I think last time I beat him, I had to use 2-3 full rejuvs. Yes, they do damage that damn fast. At least it ain't as bad as Diablo.
That was a hard boss fight.
Then, I went online and fooled around a bit, only to conclude by writing in my Online Journal and saying "Good Night!"
Friday, October 17, 2003--You know what would be just great? If all the people in the world would just be honest with each other. Then, there'd be no more lies, no more misunderstandings, no more having to read between the lines, because then there'd be nothing between the lines to read. Unfortunately, human nature is to lie whenever possible. Not me. I've resolved to be truthful, honest, and open about my opinions, for the truth is always better than a lie, and in the long-run, pays off better. I know this because of my personal experience...
What's interesting to note is that today, they had a day of school off at Leland. Incidentally, almost exactly a year ago, on Friday, October 18, 2002, there was a day off at Leland. Sarah says it has something to do with the 6-week grading periods.
I woke up at 8am and quickly prepared for my
EE20N Lab...
Then, I had lunch at the Crossroads and stockpiled Nutri-Grain bars with my extra meals because my parents say that I should stop stockpiling candy.
Mmm... Candy...
CS61A Lecture... Prof Hilfinger said some amusing stuff about proof by paradox and "biting your tail". The whole lecture was an unrelated tangent... I suppose that's a good thing, eh? Although Mrs. Bergantz' tangents were the best.
Math 54 Discusion... Man, I'm so tired...
"Power overwhelming!"
I don't know why I typed that. It just suddenly came to mind, and before I realized it, I had typed half of it, so I decided to keep it. I don't know... my mind works in random ways, apparently.
So I was trying to build my schedule for next year when I realized that I shouldn't worry about the details now, because by the time I sign up for classes, some of these class sections will have already filled up and I'll have to tear my whole plan apart anyway, so it's best to wait until November 6, when I have more accurate information as to what is open and what isn't and what choices I have to make.
For those of you who want to know, I'm planning on taking CS61B, EE40, Physics 7C, Math 55, and History 160.
Why History 160? Because the Math 55 and the History 160 lectures are in the
same room and the History 160 lecture follows
immediately after the Math, so this makes my schedule so damn convenient! That and I'm planning on using this to satisfy the upper-division part of my Humanities requirement, as well as the series part by linking it to the credit I got from the USH AP test score.
But next fall, I'm definitely prioritizing Music 26AC, no question about it. That class is
damn popular, and I want in!
Then, I played some Diablo II, got to Level 17, and slew the Claw Vipers and their leader Fangskin. I'll come and kill Cold Faggot some other day. I now wear Sparkling Mail.
After dinner, I played some FFTactics, then fell asleep, because I'm so goddamn tired.
Then, my mom came and picked me up so I could go home over the weekend. Someone remind me to pick up my Halloween costume, please.
Anyways, Franklin made a new MTG deck, using goblins and elves, the purpose of which is to make a ton of tokens. (He claims it once made 400 goblin tokens, which is hard to believe.) Incidentally, the token weenie deck can beat the counter-control deck, my Death Slivers can beat his token weenie deck, and his counter-control deck can beat my Death Slivers. Well, that's rock-paper-scissors for you.
Anyways, it's getting late. I bid you all farewell and Good Night!
Thursday, October 16, 2003--So many typi to correct...
Happy Birthday Alan!
Anyways, I overslept today and woke up at 7:30 when I should have woken up at 6:30. As a result, I walked into my Physics 7B Lecture half an hour late. Oh, well...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Turning in EE20N homework at 240 Cory...
Reading Herodotus...
Math 54 Lecture... during which I read Herodotus...
EE20N Lecture... during which I sat next to Melody and... uhh... listened to the lecture?
Break, during which I read Herodotus.
Greek Literature class, during which we--you guessed it--went over Herodotus.
On an unrelated note, on the internet, I have a tendency to typo "Leland" as "Lelenad". It's been going on for quite some time now...
Oh, and Hippocleides doesn't care.
Dinner... I ran into Mark, Ryan, and Louisa.
CS61A Lab... which I finished in half an hour...
After I got back, I did Physics homework. Then, I played some Final Fantasy Tactics, having finally set up the machine. Woot!
Then, I went fencing. Today, Coach Bridges had us try our hand at Epee. I couldn't get the feel of the weapon. I think I'll work with the Foil some more and try Saber some other time.
After that, I went online and did some stuff, and one of those things I did was update my website.
Whoa... the keyboard keys feel so heavy! Why is that? Can someone tell me?
In the meantime, I leave you with one last message: "Good Night!"
Wednesday, October 15, 2003--*yawn*
A Year Ago Today:
- PSAT day; I get the day off.
- Ryan Chao makes his first appearance in my Online Journal.
- Sarah Tseng makes her first appearance in my Online Journal... as "Little Rodent".
- Maria Motonaga makes her first appearance in my Online Journal.
- Signing Alan's birthday card... Nadia refuses.
- "We have pi over two radians of time left."
- Iwen Wu makes her first appearance in my Online Journal.
Wow... lots of stuff happened a year ago today...
Anyways...
Physics 7B Lab, and we actually did a lab about electric potential where we got to play with electrical shit. Then, we took a quiz, which I believe I aced.
I took a nap, since I barely got any sleep last night. Then, finished my CS homework, although lunch was sandwiched right in between two CS homework sessions.
CS61A Lecture... Project 2 is out... We have to implement the Enigma, the ultimate cryptography machine. It's unbreakable unless you actually know the rotors of the machine and the initial position and all that stuff.
Me: Have you read the project yet?
Tracy's friend: Enigma? Yeah.
Me: I dunno... on my first read, I found Enigma to be more mind-boggling than that. *points to the 5x5x5 Rubik's cube Tracy's friend is playing with*
Tracy's friend: What? Oh, not really. *solves the 5x5x5 Rubik's cube*
Math 54 Discussion... we had a quiz, and I owned. Interestingly enough, I had to prove something in the form "If A, then B". However, I proved that B is always true (and it is) and therefore declared by triviality that if A is true, then B is true, because B is always true anyway.
What would be interesting is if A were always true. Then, since A leads to B, that would imply that B is always true. Whoa! That's really weird logic here. I'll need to talk to someone really smart about this.
Right after the math discussion, I found and went to McLaughlin Hall so that I could get my Tele-Bears form to sign up for classes. That place needs an elevator! I had to climb all those stairs!
I like Wednesdays. They are my shortest school day of the week. I only have 4 hours of class on Wednesdays.
From 4 until dinner time, I did some reading for EE20N. Then, I had dinner with Mark, Ryan, and Louisa. Does Louisa always have dinner with us on Wednesdays?
Also, I saw Kim at the cafeteria. She acknowledged me... twice! ...and so did her roommate, who's name is Anika, which sounds like Anita with a K... supposedly...
By the way, I figured out how to anagram "Louisa". Try "I, a soul" or "AI Soul", whichever you like better. Yes, AIs have souls... at least now they do.
After dinner, I tried to do the EE20N reading, but I kept falling asleep. Later, when Steph Yaung logged on, I talked to her how I had trouble staying awake, and she announced that so did she. That makes me feel... less lonely.
Anyways, I finally finished my EE20N Homework, and it was about midnight, so I went to bed.
At about 12:30am, I woke up because I couldn't sleep, so I decided to go online and update my website, since you know I owe you so many entries. There, now we're even now, happy?
And thus, I bid you farewell and Good Night! Now, I'm tired.
Tuesday, October 14, 2003--Haha, the entry a year ago today was
incredibly short...
Physics 7B Lecture...
I sign up at Cory Hall for my Group Advising Session...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Math 54 Lecture... I ran into Elvira
again on my way out.
EE20N Lecture... This time, Melody decided to sit with someone else. Oh, well. It's not that important.
Short break, during which I sign up for the alternate midterm for EE20N (because I have a schedule conflict with the Physics 7B midterm), then I go back to my dorm and attempt to begin working on CS homework.
Greek Literature...
Joyce had a Chem midterm today, so I went to dinner at the Crossroads by myself and ran into Mark and Ryan.
Me: You're taking Kim, right?
Mark: Umm...
no one is taking Kim.
Me: Oh, my bad... I meant to say, 'You're taking
Chem, right?'
Mark: Yeah.
Me: Heh,
I'm taking Kim.
Alex (later, over AIM): You are?
Me: No, I just said that for good measure.
Kim (over AIM): Hehe, Kim sounds like Chem.
Me: So how was Kim's Chem mudterm
[sic]?
Amusing...
Actually, before those AIM conversations, I went to the CS61A Discussion, where we discussed CS61A.
Then, back in my dorm, I spent until 4 in the morning trying to work on my CS61A homework,
only to not finish. Eventually, I just couldn't think, so I decided to give up and finish it tomorrow. Thus, I didn't update my website and I didn't have a good night, but I will say Good Night anyway.
Monday, October 13, 2003--In case some of you were wondering what "Wark!" is, it's the sound a Chocobo makes in Final Fantasy 7, and, in my opinion, is the best Chocobo sound... better than FF9's "Kweh!" at least.
That and, I didn't want to put "A Year Ago Today" on the first line, because then it would be shifted over funny.
A Year Ago Today:
Woot! Happy Birthday Dark Fiends!
Physics 7B Discussion...
Long break, during which I read Herodotus.
Lunch...
EE20N Discussion... I tried to stay awake, but it was so hard... to stay awake, I mean. The material is easy.
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion...
Afterwards, I spent a lot of time trying to finish Herodotus, but I didn't.
At 8, I went fencing, and we learned "Creative defense", ie ducking under the opponent's blade. It actually looks pretty impressive, but the techniques are really hard to pull off. It's only really good for impressing newbies.
So today, during the fencing, we were given gloves to play a weird variation of the glove game, where we'd duel each other to one hit and whoever loses "dies" and is eliminated, and whomever kills the 6-fingered man wins. Supposedly, this was on something from
The Princess Bride, and the 6-fingered man wasn't "killed" until the final battle. I knew Coach Bridges would pick a skilled fencer as the 6-fingered man.
Also, while Elvira was trying to figure out how to spell my name, I put my glove on top of her head. She either didn't notice or didn't care. Speaking of Elvira, I often see that girl outside of the Chan Shun auditorium right after my Math 54 Lectures, presumably waiting for her next class. Elvira is...
Anyways, that night, I decided to take my Herodotus and my Math 54 Homework and finish them in the 7th floor lounge, marking a precedent where I would be going there for the first time at night. Kim showed up and she sat down right in front of me until Anika pointed out that she had saved a seat for her, so Kim moved. I personally don't know. Later, she supposedly gave up studying for Chem and went back to her room. There is a possibility that she wanted to get away from me, although...
I finally finished, so I snuck back into my room and went to sleep, being too tired to update my website.
Good Night!
Sunday, October 12, 2003--Wark!
A Year Ago Today:
- Justin's birthday party.
- I talk to Diane over AIM for the first time ever, and she, as expected, blocks me.
Today, after working on the reading for Herodotus in the morning, I soon had to pack up and return to Berkeley. Because my grades were good, my mom decided to let me bring the game machine to Berkeley, since, after all, it would be a waste to leave all those games at home with no one to play them.
However, I forgot to bring my Halloween costume with me. Darn... Oh, well. I'll just pick it up next week.
After arriving at Berkeley, I eat dinner, go do shit online (but fail to update my webpage because it's getting late) and then go to bed to end the Good Night.
Saturday, October 11, 2003--
Happy Birthday, Justin!
Yes, it's Justin's birthday today, and it was also his birthday
A Year Ago Today:
- I give balloons to Justin for his birthday as a prank... and go bankrupt.
- I almost get run over by Tiffany Wang.
Anyways, today, I woke up and mostly played FFTactics... and that's about it.
My family went to dinner at Cupertino Village and got some hot pot (translated better as "fire pot" actually) and during dinner, I realize that it's Justin's birthday, so I call his home, but obviously,
he's not home! Oh, well.
After telling him Happy Birthday over AIM and after playing a bunch of FFTactics, I played Diablo 2, recreating my Battle.net character.
I played all until the end of the night, for it was a Good Night.
Friday, October 10, 2003--Sorry, I haven't updated in like
forever!
A Year Ago Today:
- Justin the flag-bearer! (Why does the Blademaster carry a flag on his back?)
- What's the plural of Tiffany? Is it Tiffanies or Tiffanys? And while you're at it, is it Cindies or Cindys?
- I begin working on my Halloween costume.
EE20N Lab... We got to design a virtual pet cat, and we were supposed to try to make it not die by designing a virtual auto-feeder. This class is amusing at times...
You know, EE20N taught me that everything--even you and me--are nothing more than data, information, if you will, and in the Fourier Series lecture, we discovered that all data can be represented as a sum of sines and cosines. So, yeah, we're just a big collection of sines and cosines.
Lunch at the Crossroads...
CS61A Lecture...
Math Discussion... I aced the quiz by proving shit!
Dinner with the dudes...
After slacking off for a while longer, my mom came and picked me up and I went home for the weekend. Once I got home, I vividly recall vague memories of playing FFTactics until past midnight.
Heh, I was tempted to end it right there, but then I remembered my tradition of ending with "Good Night!"
Thursday, October 9, 2003--Addendum in
magenta below.
A Year Ago Today:
- The first addendum... points to yesterday.
- Stephanie Yaung makes her first appearance in my journal.
- Lei Huang makes her first appearance in my journal. (Wow... she used to be a good student of mine... Oh, the memories.)
- Nadia Shaw makes her first appearance in my journal.
- The Tiffanies (Wang and Hung) makes their first appearance in my journal.
Anyways...
Physics 7B Lecture...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Reading Herodotus during break...
Math 54 Lecture...
EE20N Lecture... Afterwards, Melody and I--at her request--exchanged contact info, although I will admit that I was more than happy to share contact info with her.
Homework during break...
I went to the Greek Literature class, only to find out that Jon (our teacher who is a graduate student) was involved in an accident. Luckily, he's perfectly fine, but our class was cancelled.
Physics homeowkr until dinner...
Dinner with Mark and Ryan...
CS61A Lab... which
rocked!
Did some stuff...
Fencing... today wasn't so much of a physical training day as it was a mental training day. Coach Bridges taught us how to side-judge a bout and had people 4 people (standard number) side-judging as two other people fenced. I volunteered to fence (my only bout for the day), and Alyssa was picked as my opponent. (Incidentally, I had lost to her 5-3 at the Sept 26th tournament recently, so I was eager for a rematch.) I "beat" her 4-2, even though it wasn't a real bout anyway.
I have improved. Strategically, I'm not so super-aggressive that I lack defense. Technically, my reposts (counter-attacks) have improved
greatly and I can land them with ease. However, my parries (deflecting the incoming blade) aren't doing so well. Coach Bridges told me that I'm parrying too slow and that I should take a step back to give myself more time to parry.
During my match against Alyssa, I do believe all four of my points surprised me greatly. One of them, I attacked and she parried, but my arm was still extended. There was a pause, and she attacked, by I quickly jabbed at her, which normally would have been a mistake. Luckily, since my arm was still extended (probably the reason why I attacked instead of parried), I had the right of way, and so, won the point. Alyssa should have done a beat attack, but that would have signaled to me that she would attack, and I would have parried.
Actually, the beat attack is a favorite move of mine, although it doesn't work too well. I need to work on my tactics, beating the blade every now and then just to play with their minds. Then, suddenly break out a lunge after a beat attack, catching both their blade
and their mind off guard.
Another surprising touch I made was a repost after a parry. Somehow, it landed, and I didn't even realize it. I was like, "Whoa! That landed?"
Another touch I scored was as Alyssa was charging at me. I parried her attack, then instinctively, jabbed at her with my blade as her momentum still carried me forward. It wasn't something I did by myself, but automatically, but as they say, in fencing, they want to lock these reflexes into my body so that I'll be faster in a bout.
I think the first touch I scored was the most amazing. Coach Bridges saw it. The two side-judges who were suppose to call my touches saw it. I didn't see it. Whoa!
But, yeah, I certainly feel like I'm improving. I certainly hope the UCSC tournament in two weeks will be a fun one, with enough newbies and not-so-newbies there to satisfy my twin hungers of winning and of gaining good experience by fighting a tough battle.
So anyways, after I got back to my dorm, I slacked off for quite a while. It's 1:30am now, Friday morning, so I
really should go to bed.
Good Night, everyone! (Incidentally, Emma once misheard this as "Good Night, Emma!")
Wednesday, October 8, 2003--
A Year Ago Today:
- Linda Fang makes her first appearance in my journal.
- Ke Xu makes his first appearance in my journal.
- The Shih Twins, Stacie and Stephanie, make their first appearance in my journal.
- "Oh, is it something Woytek taught you?"
- Joanna Chen makes her first appearance in my journal.
Anyway, I'd like to begin the day with...
Physics 7B Lab...
During my four hour break, I did EE20N Homework and kicked ass!
I went to the Crossroads for lunch, and shortly afterwards, Christine Wu joined me. She said this was her first time eating without Nisha. You know what? Christine barely eats anything! All she had was once slice of pizza, a small piece of cake, a cookie, and a soda. On the one hand, I know girls like to try to stay thin, but that's just ridiculous.
After lunch at the Crossroads, I started reading some Herodotus. It's actually pretty good stuff.
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion... I proved lots of shit today, again... although Leonard is better than me at proving shit... hey, I think I found a guy who's smarter than me! Yay!
After getting back to my dorm, I had a nice long chat with Kim on AIM. Basically, I apologized for acting all weird and creeping her out. Then, I told her if she just wanted to be friends, I'd respect that. Then, I asked her out to dinner "as friends". (Her SN censored for her privacy.)
[Kim] (4:29:54 PM): ummm.....not sure.....
[Kim] (4:30:53 PM): when do you plan to go to dinner?
Viltris (4:31:03 PM): whenever i want
Viltris (4:31:06 PM): i'm free the whole night
[Kim] (4:32:14 PM): o ok...well i know i'll be eating before 7 because i have to go to a chem review thing.
Viltris (4:32:20 PM): i see
[Kim] (4:32:40 PM): so yeah. maybe i'll run into you. i'll mostly likelye be eating with my friends
We ended up not going to dinner together, although Mark and Ryan have the best timing ever. At about 5:58pm, Mark called me down so that our group could go eat dinner together. Right as we reach the lobby (via the stairs), Kim comes out of the elevator with her friends.
Perfect timing, guys, perfect timing. (No, I ended up not eating dinner with Kim that day, although we did say "Hi".)
However, before that happened, apparently, Ryan, Mark, and I were supposed to have dinner with Louisa, the girl who teamed with me for the Friends Trivia.
Louisa: Hey, it's the sixth floor guy!
Me: Hi, Louisa.
Her: Sorry, I forgot your name.
Me: My name's Dwayne. Don't worry. One day, we'll
both remember each other's name at the same time.
Ryan (from aside): Luckily, that'll never happen.
*laughter*
Mark: Geez, that line can be used for just about
anything.
After dinner, we talked about anagramming people's names. My first name (as I've said before) is an anagram for "New Day". "Mark Wu" is an anagram for "Warm UK". Some names, however, like "Ihui Wu" cannot be anagrammed.
Louisa: My name can't be anagrammed.
Me: Sorry, I don't know how to spell your name, only pronounce it.
Her: L-O-U-I-S-A
Me: Hmm... 4 vowels... 2 consonants... nope, I don't think so.
Anyway, I spent quite a while discussing to Alan and Albert regarding Connie and Joanna and what was the right thing to do. Stephanie seems to agree with me, and I trust her advice. I haven't talked to Alex yet, but it's too late for that!
Now, I'll have to do one last thing before I say "Good Night!"
Tuesday, October 7, 2003--You know what I think about the recall? Some people are saying that "recalling a guy just after he got elected isn't what the lawmakers had in mind". Actually, it was. The idea of recall is to allow the people to change the governor (or
any elected official) at
any time they wanted, even if it were right after an election, so as to recalls in general, there's nothing wrong with them.
However, as to electing replacement candidates, that I
don't agree with. I mean, in this recall re-election, pretty much
anyone can run. It's so ridiculous, and although it didn't happen this time, someone could have won with a minority of the votes.
By the way, Arnold won the election, and he got a simple majority of the vote, too, I believe.
Anyways...
Physics 7B Lecture...
Lunchfast at the Golden Bear...
Math 54 Lecture...
EE20N Lecture... Melody didn't show up...
Short break...
Greek Literature...
I declined to go to dinner with Joyce since I caught up with her at 5pm and she was going to eat with friends at 5:30 and she invited me along, but I had lots of homework to do, and I didn't want to wait around and do nothing for half an hour while I could be doing homework, so I declined. She understood.
Dinner without Joyce...
CS61A Discussion...
On my way back, I thought I saw Kim walking parallel with me across the street. It turns out it really was Kim. I opened the door into the lobby for her, but she told me that she had homework to do and didn't want to "wait for the elevator" and wanted to take the stairs, even though the elevator was only about 5 seconds from arriving...
So there we have it. Kim would rather climb 7 flights of stairs than ride the elevator alone with me. Poor me...
Anyway, I spent until 1am in the morning doing CS61A Homework, which is why it took me so long to get this entry posted up.
A Year Ago Today: The debut of *shrig*.
Ah, I must tell you "Good Night!" now.
Monday, October 6, 2003--
A Year Ago Today: I start saying "Good Night" on a regular basis.
Wow... I just realized that Leland's Homecoming is about a month away... it's getting really close. (As opposed to the Berkeley Homecoming, which just passed just this weekend.) Anyways...
Physics 7B Discussion...
I read
Hecuba during my break and ate lunch.
EE20N Discussion... I briefly said "Hi" to Melody before I disappeared. Later, between my EE20N Discussion and my CS61A Lecture, I was talking to Nadia, telling her how lucky she was for having dropped to CS3S.
CS61A Lecture... I found out that my project is incomplete... later today, I fixed it.
Math 54 Discussion... I aced my midterm! Woot!
After classes, I finished my
nine-page essay on Pandora's Box. (Yes, it
is too long.)
Anyway, after dinner, I went fencing. I
think I'm improving, but whatever. I got a good workout today. I talked to Zach about the pain in my leg and he gave me some pointers on my posture and footwork. Now my hand hurts, probably from all that sword-handling.
Anyway, I started talking with Sarah and Jackie about the Leland Homecoming. That's about all for tonight.
So... Good Night!
Sunday, October 5, 2003--
A Year Ago Today: Giant Abombination
Isn't it wonderful to live a care-free life? I've learned not to care about anything anymore. I've learned to let go of myself, to let go of the world. I'm going to do whatever the hell I please, and I don't give a FUCK what happens to me or to anyone around me. I simply don't care anymore.
How's that for commentary, Nadia?
Anyways, today, I basically did homework, ie finish my CS project, start my Pandora essay, boring stuff, really. It was a boring day.
Ah, anyways, Good Night!
Saturday, October 4, 2003--Why...?
A Year Ago Today:
- Linda Fang makes her first appearance on my Journal.
- Diane Ko makes her first appearance on my Journal.
- Alex Jukl makes his first appearance on my Journal.
I'm feeling sick now...
Today, in the morning, I watched
Face Off on my roommate's comp.
After working on the CS project, I went to the football game. It was disappointing. We should have beaten Oregon!
Not much else to say.
Good Night. Leave me alone...
Friday, October 3, 2003--Yesterday, when I walked into my EE20N Lecture, Melody was fanning herself with the 3-4 page packet of notes. I had temptation to ask her, "Are you hot?" (see
May 6, 2003 entry), but I decided against it.
Anyways, there was no EE20N Lab today, so I slacked off all morning.
Just before lunch, I hid Ryan's cordless mouse on top of his microwave under his bed. Before lunch, he found it, and during lunch, he took revenge by hiding my food whenever I went to go get some more.
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion...
I worked on
Dark Fiends again and my WarCraft III Scenario... so... yeah!
A Year Ago Today: "She said 'break UP,' not 'break DOWN'."
That's about it... Alan style!
Good Night!
Thursday, October 2, 2003--The Sather Clock Tower makes beautiful music, especially from 7:45 in the morning to the hour. I was sitting in front of LeConte, listening to the clock tower play its music. Then, when the clock struck 8, I saw Kim walking down the road, so I waved to her as she waved to me...
Physics 7B Lecture...
On my way to the Golden Bear for some lunchfast, I started to think about how Sarah used to pronounce ln (natural log) as "lane". It was pretty bad. I think we
all made fun of her for that...
Math 54 Midterm during Lecture... It was decently hard,
but not hard enough!!!
When I arrived my EE20N Lecture, I grabbed the notes and sat down next to Melody...
Me: *looks at lecture notes* Whoa! I don't need to be at this lecture. I already know this stuff. Complex numbers... *turns to Melody* You think I should stay or leave?
Melody: You can leave if you want to.
Me: Shall I stay and keep you company?
Melody: No, that's all right.
Me: I think I should at least stay for the announcements.
Prof. Ross: *makes announcements and begins the lecture*
Me: Ok, Melo, I'm going to leave now. See you later. Bye!
Melody: Bye!
Me: *leaves quickly*
I upgraded to AIM 5.5beta, which has really buggy sound, but it comes with "AIM games", some of which are pretty addicting,
especially Blasterball2! I
love that game.
I spent the next 2 hours playing AIM games when I should have been working.
Greek Literature...
Dinner with Joyce...
CS61A Lab...
I only spent 45 minutes there... pretty good, considering that I had never looked at the lab before and was taking my time.
Later that night, I went fencing and I learned Lower-Body attacks. This quite literally doubles my fencing skill, and with Lower-Body attacks, I can, supposedly, cream newbies at the Novice Tournament at Santa Cruz... or was it Santa Clara. It doesn't matter... I'll kick ass either way!
Anyway, not that I'm back, it's getting late. Lucky thing I have no EE20N Lab tomorrow.
Anyways, nothing happened a year ago today... except maybe...
A Year Ago Today: The first reference to my little brother.
Excellent...
Now, I can end the night with a "Good Night!"
Wednesday, October 1, 2003--I woke up and went to the Physics 7B Lab, where only 3 of us showed up. The GSI showed up late and when the Lab finally began, there were only 7 of us. The number
slowly grew.
4 hour break + lunch...
CS61A Lecture...
Math 54 Discussion...
After screwing around until dinner, I... uhh... went to dinner.
Then, I had the EE20N Midterm, which was
easy!
Anyways, after getting back, I screwed around
a lot!
Anyways, it's getting late. I really should be going to bed now.
And no, nothing happened A Year Ago Today.
Good Night! Don't let the succubi bite!
